Blew it!

Unread postby James » Sun Sep 23, 2012 2:32 pm

Well, you don't get many second chances on mature pressured public land bucks, but I'm praying I do tonight....

I was setup on a buck that I photographed a week ago friday. AC Rider and I hunted him hard last Saturday and Sunday and he never showed. Tonight I had a very marginal wind but decided to try him one last time. At 5:45 a decent bodied 6 or 8 point came out into an opening. Later I saw a couple doe headed for water. Usually in this spot if you don't see the deer an hour before quitting you won't see them. They always move early.

At 10 minutes to quitting I hear a deer get up out of his bed and start walking towards my tree. Through an opening I finally see that it's the buck I'm after, a heavy framed massive 8 with a great spread. He literally walks to the same tree that I took my 2009 buck by. I settled in my 30 yard pin and the let fly. The shot felt great but I never heard impact. He took 2 big bounds and then stood like nothing happened. He then casually walked into his bedding.

I waited a while and slipped out of there. Never went to check my arrow, but I'm 99% positive I missed. I'll be setup on him again tomorrow night.

Here is a blurry photo of the buck...

Too bad James, he looks like a stud, good luck with him tomorrow.

If he doesn't show up tomorrow will you check the bed to make sure you didn't get him? You are likely right about the miss but sometimes you just never know.

Good luck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Yes, I weighed checking my arrow before tomorrows hunt, but it's a game of inches in this spot and if he's alive and bedded tomorrow night it could ruin my chances. With the freezing temps tonight he'l be fine if he's dead.

I am confused why you didn't go check your arrow?? You're pretty sure you missed yet the shot felt great. Don't you owe it to the animal to at least check your arrow?? Am I the only one who thinks this is wrong??

I agree, if you take the shot you have to take the responsibility of following up. If you burn the area, so be it. That's part of being an ethical, responsible sportsman.

I dont think James is being unethical really. He didn't say he was unsure about the shot. He said he was 99% sure it was a miss. This isn't his first rodeo, I'm pretty sure he has a number of kills to his name and will check to make sure after the hunt tonight.

"The shot felt great"

After tonight's hunt you got to check. If it was an open shot, I'm figuring he's dead.
