So is an older buck with a smaller rack a trophy?

I didn't pass on that old swamper from '09 and his rack was nothing special. He was old and on the downslide with his rack but man what a thrill it still was

Re: Not all old bucks have great racks....
I believe people talk about old deer. I also believe people talk more about rack size. I mean the record books don't go by age or weight they go by rack size. The majority of big buck hunters are after a good rack. My vote goes to rack size.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I would gladly shoot an old warrior with a smaller rack!! Especially if it was a deer you had some history with through pictures, sightings, etc.. Where I hunt these old bucks are few and far between so I would cherish any old buck!!

I went back and looked at your Northern Minnesota public buck kills the past 3 seasons!! There is just something special and beautiful about an old Northwoods public land buck!! Congrats again Steve!! That is a great accomplishment!! Great pictures too!!

Right on!! This past year (2011) I was hunting for 2 different bucks. The older of the 2 was the smallest, 115 Incher If he's lucky. He was a 5.5 In 2011. I actually did let him go 3 times the year before as he was supporting a whopping 108 Inches of rack (got his sheds). Not all old bucks have great racks....

I will take a block-bodied old warrior any day even with a lesser rack, they will tend to have some mass. I guess I just enjoy outwitting a mature buck, the bigger rack is just an extra plus in my book!

Re: Not all old bucks have great racks....
I try my best to go after old deer. I would be lying if I told you that's always the case. A huge set of antlers gets me pretty cranked up.
This year I burnt a tag on an old, mainframe 7 point. After watching him for a while I could really appreciate how he controlled the property he lived in and he made it a nightmare for the other deer in there. He was the boss and dwarfed all the other deer in stature. In the past, I have taken a couple other "management" bucks as people call them. I do find myself chasing antler at times though.

I would take satisfaction in taking an older buck regardless of it's rack. From the perspective of accomplishment taking an older buck means a lot.
