The Hunting Beast

Post all the ways to find beds. There are so many "typical areas" to look, and I'm completely new at this bed hunting strategy, I need to see this all in one place so I can then transfer it to my hunting notes. An example may be- "a lone cluster of timber on a high spot in a marsh" etc...

I'll start-

I saw one member say he "bass fishes" for buck bedding spots, meaning that while walking through the woods, one should further investigate thick, brushy areas a big buck may be bedded up, much like a big bass lurking in the cover of a fallen tree.

Marsh......walk the transition lines .....where the cattails meet the red brush that meets the woods ...right in there is wear you will find most bedding..on little island of land mass .....any wear from 3 ft wide to 2ft high...



















Hill country....they like to bed just off the tips of point ....they also tend to bed all at the same elevation in the thermal tunnels on the down wind side of the ridge

I find most my beds in the marsh on that transition line but specifically on the points and around the bowls.

most the time it is on the transition line of the red brush and the cattails in the marsh. But it's always that 1 lone tree that gets me and most of the time there is bedding there. That tree may be 50 yards or 100 yards from the edge of a point or island.

Czabs- What do you mean by a "bowl" (I think I know, only because I watches Extreme Whitetail Tactics last night, but could you elaborate a bit?)

I like that tip about comparing it to bass fishing, that is one that I can relate too.

he means like when the transition line is running straight line and then it dips in like a bowl then continues straight again

Thanks for posting a pic Bighunt, that is exactly what I was talking about. I did a run and gun set in the swamp just going off fresh sign, not aerial maps. I marked my stand on my, and when I looked back on google earth I was positioned at the peak of the bowl. My only shoooter buck I saw all year in 2011 was bedded somewhere around that bowl. I scouted it out in December when we had lack of snow and found a few big beds and a ton of rubs.

I was out yesterday scouting some land adjacent to where I hunt. This is farmland by the way. I found one bedding area in about 160 acres. It was a doe bedding area, with a possible younger buck bedding just off to the side. It was thicker than the the sourounding area. There was a slight elevation change, maybe 10 feet max. There where probably 20 beds. Most had a by a bush, whith some sort of overhead cover. The buck bed was about 30 yards away from this main doe area. It had a rub right next to the bed and several more in the immeidiate vacinity. the rubs were small and low, so I am assuming it's a smaller buck. He was on the edge of cover with a drainage ditch protecting him on 2 sides. The ditch met a a 90 degree angle. He had good a good line of sight to the east and south. The prevailing winds are out of the west. Since it's not an area I can hunt (had permission to walk it), I assume this little pocket has little pressure.

for the farm boys- the opposite corner of the predominent wind will be thick and hold doe beds- look 50-100 beyond in the same direction atop any rise

fallen trees along creeks or islands within them

sad but true- old junk, delapedated barns and farm equipment in fields
