Was talking to a guy yesterday about this topic. Thought it would be a good topic to poll.

When there's allot of snow deer go to a good food source they can find. Deer don't group up In area's where there's no food.

I would have to say food, however I think proper cover has a lot to do with it. I have an area on public land that doesn't have A TRACK when in the winter. The private land about a mile away is covered with deer because of the food and a cedar swamp. There is food over by the public but just cattail swamp for cover. I think food is the #1 reason with cover coming in a close 2nd.

I chose snow but really I think its a snow/food combo. The snow will cover up a lot of food and push the deer to yard up near a better food source.

Do deer yard up in Florida? They do have food sources in Florida. Food for thought. ;)

How far will a deer travel back and forth from prefered yarding cover to get a prefered food source. Will they stick closer to cover and eat a lesser food like browse.Or will they burn energy to get to standing corn a mile away if no bedding is close to the corn.

I see deer traveling over a mile to a good food source quite a bit. If it's high quality food they will travel a long ways for it but if the temps get really frigid below zero they will bed closer as long as they are not disturbed.

Definitely don't yard up, here, either.

I have no experience with this. But, do deer yard up....with no snow cover?
