Public Land Bow Buck on a Rifle Hunt

Unread postby TN Whitetail Freak » Fri Mar 05, 2021 3:00 am

Well the first week of November was a crazy one for having to make hunting decisions in 2020. I had just put in vacation to go hunt north Missouri for 12 days. Well I had been moving cams around since Oct 1 trying to find the biggest deer of 2020 on another piece of public with him on 4 of the cams in a certain spot. There was one cam I hadn't got to since Sept 29. Well on Nov 4th I went in at 10pm and checked all the cams. The unchecked cam had the #1 on it in daylight 6 of the last 8 days! Now I couldn't go to Missouri and the weather was going to be terribly hot. Meanwhile my brother calls and asked if I was going to make it to deer camp on the Duck River draw hunt this past weekend. I forgot all about it! Now I had a decision to make. Stay and hunt the biggest deer of my life, leave for the Missouri rut, or go experience a deer camp atmosphere for the first time. I delayed Missouri and hunted the #1 two mornings, Wednesday and Thursday. I had a 47 yd encounter on the second morning. The wind was going to be hot and terrible to hunt the #1 so I opted to just go to the draw hunt. I scouted hard day 1 and the morning of day 2. I decided on an area based on food and terrain for the evening sit. Around 5pm this buck came in hit a scrape and then a natural water hole. On his way to acorns I stopped him at 32 yards and put an arrow through him. He ran and I was able to stop him at 45 with bleats and put another arrow in him. He died 60 yds away from where he was standing on the 2nd shot. Overall deer camp was fun and seen deer every sit and even walked up on another shooter while tracking the buck I killed. I did go back after him and had a 32 yd ground encounter on Nov. 15th. As he was sneaking through he came 2 steps from my lane and he stopped. That 6th sense kicked in and he turned around for my 2nd encounter. I bounced around that core area and on Nov 29, I caught him on a doe 300 yds south of initial encounters and snort wheezed him into 55 yds but he did not want to leave his doe. The third encounter was my last and he left the area as the rut kicked in. I continued to run cams and did not get pictures again until last week of January through February 12th. He made it through season so I'm looking to get back on him if he makes it to hunting season and anxious how that frame grows. He will be 6 this season.

Sounds like a worthy adversary! Hope you can get on him again.
