I got spoiled with a couple of 2 or 3 hunt years, then tagged. Torn on what’s better, season over quickly after thinking about it all year, or getting to spend time away from daily chores/work.

Might be EHD, foot rot or some other chronic condition. We have had EHD in the area too often the past decade.

Beautiful buck! Curious about the EHD...how bad has it affected the herds in your area? We had a bad episode last year and I’m amazed how many less deer and bucks I’m seeing this year. Some places where I could dependably see 8–10 does most sits are now reduced to 2-4 and more often zero.

2019 I found 3 dead EHD bucks on the home 220 acres. Probably missed some of the dead deer there as I filled my tag before walking around much. Wish I remembered the year, maybe 2013, one property in CRP was a bone yard come spring. Thankfully it has been spotty, but seems more frequent than I remember.

Iowa DNR got pressure a decade ago to thin the population (insurance and farm lobbyists). Very liberal deer tags, which I shot my fair share. Between EHD and continuing doe tags (which I’m not buying), slow recovery of the herd in my part of the state.

I took the arrow I shot him with out of the quiver today to remove the damaged Rocket Hammerhead and saw that the metal jacket of the Easton FMJ was split. Oh well, killed two bucks with that arrow. Time to buy a half dozen more.
