2020 Archery grind

Unread postby UntouchableNess » Wed Nov 25, 2020 3:31 am

I started rutcation on November 6 and spent many a day from before sunrise to after sunset without climbing down from the tree. I just wasn't seeing the quality of bucks I felt were in the area, or at least what trail cams had shown during the summer. I've been in that situation before, bucks move out of their summer bachelor groups as the rut nears. I was seeing good numbers of does, so figured it would just be a matter of time before a hot doe drug a decent buck by my stand. This guy had just left a doe he was chasing the night before and came by my stand. I was tempted, but was hoping for better. You can see me in the stand in the background.

So I continued to hunt the home farm, played cat and mouse with a decent buck on the evening of Nov 13, 14, morning and evening of the 15th. He was bedding on the neighbor's across the road and waited until the last minute to come over. It was too dark for a shot every time.

Finally, I decided to hunt a property I hadn't set foot on since shooting an archery buck there mid-October last year. Morning of Friday, November 20, day 14 of hunting, I hung the LW along a creek that usually has scrapes associate with it. At 8:11 am, a buck works a scrape on the other side of the creek, does a loop, pushes a couple of does under my stand as he passes next to the base of the tree. Another pass on a young buck. At 11 am, I hear splashing in the creek behind the stand, peek around the tree and see a buck walking in the water. I immediately stood and drew, as he was approaching the shooting lane quickly. I got the pin on him, tripped the release, watched the arrow hit him in his right side. He explodes up the creek, climbing out of it and finding yet a higher gear. Took that, along with gushing blood and raspy lungs to mean he was on his death sprint. Climbed down and found the arrow laying half in/half out of the creek. Bubbles on the vanes.

Looking at his hooves, it appears he might have had EHD at some time.

Almost good to be back to work and rest up a bit, LOL. I will be able to relax around a Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, giving thanks.

Wow beautiful deer! Interesting about the hooves showing evidence of possibly past EHD infection. I honestly haven’t read much on it, so good to know that’s a characteristic.

Congrats to you on a great buck!

Awesome Ness!

So deformed hooves is a sign of previous EHD infection?

Might be EHD, foot rot or some other chronic condition. We have had EHD in the area too often the past decade.
