Making it happen

Unread postby treeroot » Fri Nov 29, 2019 2:37 pm

Today was supposed to be 14-16mph nw wind. I've been waiting for a strong nw to sneak into a bedding area on my property. To get there I have to wait in the am until the deer exit the field so I don't blow the field out. Which means getting into the bedding 80 yards off the field isn't the greatest time.

Last night a good friend of mine I used to hunt together with a lot called and i could tell he was looking for someplace to go. So I told him he could hunt my box stand I take my kids to, just to try and let them see deer. We met up this morning and I said I can't go where I planned with the swirling winds unless they calm down once daylight hits. So we decided to sit together and share some laughs.

It was snowing and blowing hard when I catch a glimpse of a buck heading into a patch of brush. He was following what I suspected to be a doe. I've seen bucks use this brush for rut beding and breeding in the past. I didn't count points but made the decision if i had a shot I'd take it. I had him in my scope at around 260 yards, but with the cross wind and brush I didn't like the shot. So I told him let's wait a bit and see if he pops out. An hour later I see him stand, rake some brush and disappear again still no shot. At this point I know i have two hours max before I'm supposed to be heading for the inlaws. So I tell my buddy I'm going to take a lap all the way around the property and get in close enough to shoot him off the backside of the brush. I knew if I could get there one of us would get a shot. He thought I was nuts. But i wasn't going to wait around for him to sneak out the back door.

45 minutes later moving with the wind gusts I got close and crawled the last 200 yards on the hill above the brush under a pine tree. I kicked myself for dropping my climbing sticks and pack when I started crawling. I couldn't see down into the brush like i was hoping. So i stood up and held down on a branch and just watched. 30 minutes later a spike stands up and starts browsing. A little while later I see the tips of his rack scanning around. For the next hour and 15 minutes I sit behind my scope just waiting for him to stand.

My view from inside the tree.

Eventually he stood up and I shot. He took three bounds and stopped acting like he wasn't hit, so i put another one in him and he fell over. I was confused because I knew I should've heart shot him he was only 30 yards, but better safe than sorry. The first shot was a heart shot.

His bed.

View from his bed to the tree. I was in the closest pine on the left in the picture. The spike got within 15 yards I could've believe I was getting away with standing there in bright orange.
