My first with a slug gun

Unread postby trdtnlbwhntr » Mon Nov 18, 2013 4:21 am

Ive been shotgun hunting since I was 16, never really had decent ground to hunt on until I was in college. Even then when the guns came out my standards went up. Im not too proud to say I have missed two bucks with a slug gun in my younger years, but up till Saturday morning I had yet to connect with a buck during shotgun season here in Indiana. Saturday morning dawned with warm S winds steady at 18-20mph. Deer movement was slow compared to last year when there were deer moving about every place. After watching some small bucks work around on the hill for about 2 hours, I figured it was going to remain slow most of the day. For whatever reason I looked over my left shoulder and saw a lone doe standing there. She was a big doe and I figured if she stood around long enough I would shoot her. I put my hearing protection on and got prepared to shoot her, then from about 30 yards behind her around a blow down, I saw a big right side pop up. Long tines, tall right side. I didn't bother to look at the left side as he was walking broadside at about 75 yards. My scope scanned his antler and then went to his vitals. When he got to about 45 yards I grunted at him and he stopped. The crosshairs settled on his heart and the lightfield slug was on its way. At first I thought I missed. Then when he turned back to the right I saw the blood spray out of his side and knew it was over. He went a short 40 yards and died. He is my best to date and I am certainly proud of him. Now my buck season is finished here in Indiana and I will focus on shooting a couple of does for families that need the meat.

All told he was a 12 when I shot him. On his death run be busted off his G2 on his left side, I cant find the darn thing, but the break was super fresh and you could see the bark stuck on the break where it happened. Other than that, he is a solid 140" gross type buck and Im very happy with him. To top it all off, my dad, and best buddy were hunting not far from me and they came over to help and take some photos.

As a side note. If you have not shot lightfield slugs, you should be. They are absolutely the most accurate, hard hitting slug I have ever put down range.

Great buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Nice buck and well done.

On the lightfields, they were the only slug that didn't come out of my new slug barrel when I bought it back in 96. But now that I think of it, they were the only 3" shells I ever shot out of it. I started with federal, then went to partition gold, now shooting hornadys. Which lightfield are you shooting? Maybe I will try them again.
