Marking sheds with year

Unread postby jac » Fri Mar 12, 2021 7:24 am

Does anyone mark their sheds with the year? I'd like to find the best way to discretely mark each shed with the year and not regret it. Two options I currently have it lightly right on the pedicle with pencil and the other option would be to make a band with a label maker and put it loosely around the base.

Thoughts?

Just write it on pedicle. I don’t write the year but do measure each shed and write it on with a Sharpie. Nice for comparing sheds to each other for fun and to get better at field judging live deer.

As far as year and location I can tell you all of mine from memory exactly where I found them and when. I don’t find crazy numbers of sheds like some do.

I write the year and location on the backside of the base of mine with a sharpie. I travel a lot so I might forget where they came from if I dont mark them.

I put some masking tape around the base and write the date and location it was found on the tape.

I use onX hunting app on my phone to mark the exact location I find sheds every year. I will even go back in later with measurements of the nice ones to remind me where I found some of the bigger ones or input if they were matched. You can change the colors of the pins as well. Outside of that I’ll pencil on the base the measurements.

I use onX as well, I mark where I picked it up and also save the picture to it. I also log my shed hunts in my hunting log. I like to track my sheds per mile ratio.

You could use some of those wire tie tags if you didn't want to mark the antler itself.

My step dad used to mark his with a sharpie on the base. I don't think it looked bad, it really help when looking at them years later. I would do that before a tag.

I have a couple brothers that own a signs and engraving business so I've had them engrave basically like a dog tag for each shed i have. They all have year and location on them. Just tie the dog tag to each shed with a small diameter paracord. Every year i just put in a order for all the sheds I've found. Works real good.
