Double Digit Day of Shed Hunting

Unread postby seazofcheeze » Thu Mar 04, 2021 12:12 pm

We revisited a spot that held a bunch last year and got a good haul again this year, plus a pretty unexpected surprise towards the end of the day!

Wow awesome day! That's closer to a decade worth of sheds for me ha. Do you suppose that mulie died in his bed in the fork of that big downed cottonwood?
It only takes 15 seconds for the hunt of a lifetime.

Wow that's a pile of sheds, do you have an idea of how many miles you put on finding them?

Yea, I'm assuming someone put a bad hit on him and never recovered. Looked like a good hiding spot.

Thanks man, hopefully we will find a few next weekend

We put on almost exactly 8 miles according to OnX track that day. My average is a lot closer to 1 shed per 4 miles though. We walked 6 miles the following day and didn't find one.

Did you guys find them around a certain elevation line? It seems like the Hush guys talk about that a lot when looking for elk sheds.

Definitely a good one. We usually find 0-2 sheds on a typical walk.

Never hurts to bring along the good luck charm. My girlfriend isn't much for hunting, but she has got really excited about shed hunting the last two years.

I think that is more of an elk shed thing. It seems like the bulls follow the snow melt up the mountain in the spring, so depending on the winter/snow depth, it seems like when you start finding sheds near a certain elevation, its a good idea to stick around that elevation +/- a few hundred feet for that year. As with all things hunting, nothing is set in stone though.

I think the area we found these sheds is just a wintering area for the deer in the area. We saw 100+ deer in a near by ag field the same day.

That’s a great day. 8-)

It’s unreal some of those lay there for so long untouched. Around here if you don’t pick them up fairly quicky rodents consume them in a matter of days sometimes. I rarely find one that wasn’t chewed on at least a little bit.
