What’s your Holy Grail?

Unread postby SplitG2 » Fri Jan 31, 2020 2:38 am

I love shed hunting just as much as I do actually hunting. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to pick up about 400 whitetail sheds, not as many as a lot of other people but for my area it’s a lot. One thing I love to see in people’s collection is their holy grail, the shed or set of sheds that are like those once in a lifetime kinda finds or extremely rare finds. They don’t necessarily have to be big, they can be small sheds that have a great story as to how/where you found them. For those of you willing to share, I’d love to see your holy grails.

I have 2 holy grails. One is an elk shed I found on a DIY elk hunt in Colorado. It is a once in a lifetime find for me giving that I’m from Ohio but the size of it, location where I found it and the fact that the unit I found it in, a bull like this is highly unlikely. I found it on mile 8 of a 16 mile hunt that day in a place that I’d venture to say I think I might have been the first person in that area since the Indians. The mass and tine length are pretty impressive and even tho it was a really old find and is missing some bone it still scored 183”. The very next morning I killed my first DIY archery bull.

The 2nd holy grail is my whitetail holy grail. It is a buck that I nearly killed twice in the 2009 season, looked hard for his sheds the following spring but failed and then eventually found the first day of bow season the following season on my sons very first deer hunt at the age of 1 year and 11months(at the time). It was an 11 point that green scored 179” (given just a 14” spread) and sported mass not typical for my area. All 3 of these sheds are finds I’ll never forget.

Wow, awesome shed cheeze. Congrats on a great find. Mine too is my only elk shed. I did find a dead head on my first diy archery elk hunt the year before but it was really old and severely chewed. I still carried it outta that canyon tho and brought it home. Would love to go on an actual elk shed hunt out west sometime.

I have found a lot of sheds, but only 2 really really stick out in my memory. The "snowstorm drop" and "barbwire". Luckily I had a camera along years back as these were before smartphones.

First elk shed and a match set at that. If grinding for an antler is a thing.... I grinded for those. Found 3 last year. I will pile them up this year

I found a set of 150” 8 point sheds in Michigan in 2014. I found one side of a non typical that had 13 points on public land in another state. That buck was shot the next year it scored over 200”. Those are my two best

I found 5 sheds from the same buck then killed him, all on 30 acres, I'll never do that again. That's my holy grail.

Tbuano, that’s a great set. I can relate to the shed grind when it comes to whitetails. Sometimes I can go out and find several sheds in just a couple miles walk and then sometimes I feel like I’ve walked around the world twice before I find one.

And muddy the barbwire shed is pretty awesome. Very cool find and conversation piece.

Thanks for sharing everyone.

Whoever posted the pic of the barb wire shed I have a question. Did you have to cut it out, lol.

I love this thread! I've still got a ways to go to find all my "Holy Grail" desires but I have been extremely lucky to cross off one of the more difficult (geographically and remotely, certainly not visually). Here are a few photos of my moose shed antler adventures. I had to travel a bit to put myself in an area to find these and thankful for the helpful tips from shed hunting friends. Moose sheds have always been on my bucket list but now that I've got a few, my spring doesn't feel complete without at least one of these adventures!

Not exactly sheds  but my holy grail. Thousands of years old petrified deer antlers killed by native Americans and found on there camps. I will confess I only found 1 of these and traded some arrowheads for the others. Trying to get enough to make a display case. One of my most prized possessions.
