Average range of deer during winter

Unread postby Tillytheace » Thu Jan 22, 2015 4:51 am

ive noticed plenty of deer tracks over the last few weeks in my backyard. I put out my trail cam and have roughly 12 different deer on camera. I've had a sweet half rack buck on camera a few times. All were about an hour and a half before sunrise. I'm sure he has more than one food source seeings as though I get his picture about every 3 days. The houses in my area all average from 1-5 acres of property. Behind my house are 3 ag fields 2of which are cut corn and there's about a 2 acre grass/marsh back there but it's about a 3rd to 1/2 mile away. There's a few sections of woods as well but none of them amount to more than an acre or 2. My question is how far is this buck traveling during the winter that he's walking through my backyard. I've noticed that wintering does will often bed in or within 100 yards of food, how does it differ for bucks? In comparison to our last few winters of cold/snow, this one has been kind of mind so far IMO.
Any input?
I'd really like to pick up his shed when it drops, slim chance it'll fall off in my backyard? Wishful thinking...

It really depends on the property from what I've seen. They travel further in public land areas to find food. I once hunted a area behind my house was very thick I had several deer that never left a 100 acre area. In like Kansas deer travel much further. But it also is a deers personality some deer like humans never leave home where others explore . On average I would guess 300 -400 acres in my part of the country. If you have any buck beds on your property you should find some sheds. The bucks should return to bedding near available food sources since they lost so much body weight during the rut and hunting pressure.

Thanks for a little insight Tennhunter3

I forgot to mention I live in SE Wisconsin. also the guy across the road has a 15+ acre oak woods. Maybe some of the deer are either bedding or eating in there and they are using my yard as a travel route to the field?

I'd say depends on snow depth... right now easy for them to travel mile plus food to bed. Deep snow and cold I'd say 100-200 acre range

Agreed. Last year was a perfect example of small winter ranges. Deep snow and extreme cold kept the ranges small...too small in many cases as seen with winter kill and stress.
