Battle On Bago cancelled

Unread postby Dewey » Sat Feb 18, 2017 5:23 am

Battle on Bago Press Release:

Friday February 17, 2017

Due to the unseasonably warm weather and uncertainty in ice conditions for next week, the Board of Directors for Battle on Bago have decided to cancel the fishing portion of the event for 2017. We understand that there are many fishermen that would safely navigate the ice on the Winnebago System next weekend; however, we have to take into account the number of participants who are unfamiliar with the rapidly changing ice conditions. Safety takes precedence in our event, and although the ice is never deemed 100% safe, we do understand what 7 days of warm weather will do to the landings and ice conditions.

We have enjoyed 9 straight years of a safe fishing event that has brought thousands of fisherman from around the country to Lake Winnebago and the Oshkosh Community. Battle on Bago wants to ensure the event continues to thrive for years to come and does not want the potential for negative publicity to overshadow what the event has done the previous 9 years.

As previously indicated in our update from Wednesday, the 10th Anniversary celebration will take place as planned at Menominee Park both Friday and Saturday with live music, food, beer, merchandise, and raffles. Individuals who have purchased 2017 fishing tickets will have the following options.

1. Hold on to the tickets and they will be honored for 2018 Battle on Bago.

2. Trade the tickets at the event for 7 raffle tickets (per fishing ticket). Prize drawing held on Saturday at 5:00pm.

3. Donate the tickets back to Battle on Bago for a Tax Donation Letter

4. Mail the tickets for a full refund by March 31, 2017 to:

Associated Bank c/o Battle on Bago Foundation

444 N Sawyer Street

Oshkosh, WI 54902

We appreciate your support over the last 9 years and look forward to seeing many of you at the event next weekend to celebrate our 10th Anniversary.

Sincerely,

The Battle on Bago Board of DIrectors

Not surprising when you look at the forecast for the next week. Been hearing about a lot of unmarked sturgeon holes and the ones that were marked many of the markers fell down or will for sure with the wind and warm temps. Also with the warm weather the holes will greatly increase with size eroding even more ice below. A few weeks ago on other lakes 8" auger holes opened up to 2 feet in diameter with a few warm days and rain. Can't imagine how big the sturgeon holes will get in the next week.

Lot's of people head out there without any common sense whatsoever so they had to protect those people by cancelling the event. The experienced guys know the limits and respect the lake. Thinking the guys shutting this down avoided some major tragedies from happening. I'm sure the decision is unpopular but it is the right thing to do.

100% agree. If they didn't cancel it, and somebody put a truck through, they would probably blame the tournament for it.

One point though, the sturgeon hole marking is a joke. Guys think mounding up slush around a wooden stake will properly mark it just makes me shake my head. Couple years ago on poygan I saw a guy drop a tire in one that wasn't ever marked. No stakes, no trees, nothing. Ripped the tire right off the truck.

I really hate driving out after sturgeon spearing for that reason. Lots of yahoos out there who don't even think about how big of a hole they leave in the ice

I think most of the fishing club bridges have already been pulled off.

Just the vehicle bridges are coming off. The atv guys are foaming at the mouth right now. Best fishing around the corner and nobody out there anymore.

Atv bridges will be out there for quite awhile. If the mouth doesn't melt from runoff, it will be a good year to own an atv

I have to believe that they cancelled the event because of the people that shown up for it. Both the amount and the lack of common sense that happens out there. People think that just cuz there's ice, it's drivable. Saw two trucks with Illinois plates on Cruz dangerously close to the mouth of the river in Oshkosh last year. There couldn't have been more than 6-8 inches of ice where they drove. The average guy would be safe on a sled wheeler or walking. It's the people that don't know the water and those that lack common sense that are dangerous. Good call with the cancellation. I'll be fishin and doing a little drinking at the tent afterwards next weekend

Actually during average years now is usually peak ice thickness in WI.

Usually way up north ice is 24"-40" thick in mid February but right now most lakes are only 15"-20" thick max with a few as low as 12". Very warm winter affecting the entire state.

There are also years you can't onto bago until late January. Last year I couldn't get an atv on poygan until the second weekend of January. Bago was another 2 weeks.

Plus they also have other tournaments on the lake plus sturgeon spearing. In the area, sturgeon spearing is a bigger deal than deer hunting. The only better option would be the weekend before sturgeon spearing, but the biggest fishing club on the lake has their own tournament then. That same club also sponsors the battle on bago. The first tournament I believe goes into the clubs funds for bridges, trucks, plows, etc. so they won't change that.

Diehards are still spearing yet.

Got this email from DNR today. Lot's of shacks on the ice :o

Winnebago System Sturgeon Spearing Enthusiasts:

Day 8 Sturgeon Spearing Harvest Report - Saturday February 18, 2017

We are now ½ way through the 2017 sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes. The majority of the license holders have already called it a season with the unseasonably warm weather, but we still have a number of diehard spearers still looking to fill their tag. One of our DNR pilots was up in the air today for an earial shanty count and there were still 826 shanties on Lake Winnebago this morning with another 90 on the Upriver Lakes.

A total of 31 fish were harvested today with 20 coming from Lake Winnebago and 11 from the Upriver Lakes. The largest fish was Tom Kulibert’s 118.9 pound (72.5”) female that he registered at Wendt’s (photo included in report). With the drop in harvest the last few days it looks like we will have our first 16-day season on the Upriver Lakes.

Is it too late to buy stock in SUNK? That guy is going to make a killing this year. And on top of it he runs the biggest fishing club on the lake. Probably the biggest in the state.

Best business idea ever. You simply can't fix stupid.

Good call cancelling the fishing contest. Huge ice shoves on the south end and west side today from the winds overnight. Entire lake sheet is moving and with strong winds the next few days it's only going to get worse.

Check out the pics.
