Yeah its not allergy based like poison ivy, it's the chemical reaction with the sun that burns the skin. Giant hogweed seems pretty mean. Wild parsnip at least you can dig up the first year rosettes in the fall and have....parsnip. The wild and domestic parsnip are the same plant.

Have it here. Dec and towns will spray it even on private. It can be huge (15ft tall w 2-3ft leaves) and is nothing you'll confuse w parsnip...especially the dermal reaction. Far far worse!

That parsnip is all over the place by me, haven't got burned by it yet. Long sleeves and soap and water once I get home.

I seen a video on hogweed awhile back from the U.P. I think definitely somewhere from Michigan like a video link in a email. im going to take pictures of some I think is and maybe send to dnr to take care of. It's either that or cow parsnip. I might just call it in.

Wild Parsnip is terrible and everywhere it seems. But I haven't gotten anything from it yet. It's almost impossible not to walk through it at times.

Does the plant need to be broken to get sap on you? Or is it on the surface of the leaves?

Dont quote me, someone correct me if i am off track but yes i believe the worst reactions are from contacting a broken stem but you can also get it just from rubbing up against it, just not as mean as poison ivy, i think you would have to rub up against a lot of it to get the same effect as a broken stem.
