Home Turkey Nest

Unread postby Schubox1265 » Sat May 18, 2013 1:26 am

I was really surprised to find a turkey nesting so close to activity on my property. I bumped her by accident while moving a dead Christmas tree. She is literally 10 feet from the fence that holds my two Great Danes, and 25 feet off my driveway. The dogs do not have a clue, which is good. They are house dogs, so they are only in the kennel for a few hours a day. Danes are generally loungers, so they mostly hang out on their trampoline, which is about 60 feet from this nest, and just out of the photo on the right.

I grabbed my camera for a nest photo when I bumped her:

The following day I circled to the opposite side of the nest and set-up my tripod for a zoom shot. I didn't really know if she was there, as I stayed at a safe distance. I just zoomed my Nikon to the base of the tree and fired:

Hopefully I can get some photos of her poults some day.

Kinda reminds me of a big buck bedding in the unlikeliest of places...

Cool, maybe you could set up a trail cam over the nest.

That will be great footage. Can't wait to see the results.

Another view from inside the kennel. I'm not going to bump her in this rain. The covert cam will have to wait...

That is really cool. Does your camera take videos with sound? I have heard that a hen will vocalize to her eggs while incubating them and im sure not many people have recorded those sounds on a wild bird.

Re: Home Turkey Nest - We have Chicks!

Unread postby Schubox1265 » Tue Jun 11, 2013 5:46 am

Two weeks after the discovery, I finally got the opportunity to set two trail cameras on the nest. A Covert in still mode, and a Bushnell in video mode.

I was surprised that there was another hen that visited the nesting hen quite frequently:

This one really took me by surprise! Disaster averted. Whew!
That's my Great Dane Remmi.

This is the last unattended picture I have showing the eggs as unhatched:

Another surprise. A deer comes in for a visit.

Finally, the chicks appear on camera!

Amazing camouflage.

Here are the three best videos:

This last one is a hoot. This shows the 'runt' of the 'litter' and the last to leave the nest. Very clumsy, and mom comes back.

I hope you enjoyed this, I know I sure did!

Sorry hunter_mike, I do not have audio on the Bushnell...

Nice thread!

I would think they are about to hatch. I think your best videos are yet to come!

Make sure you have batteries so we can have it running at the hatch.... should be very soon!

??? Is this a 'mess with your head' reply? I'm confused...

I replaced the camera cards, but my guess is that they will never return to the nest once the scent of hatched eggs is in the air.
Thoughts?

Thanks for viewing.
