Almost got tagged tonight.

Unread postby Tennhunter3 » Thu Aug 13, 2020 12:06 pm

I went out this afternoon to check a cam and walked up on a 4 foot long king snake. So I pulled the cam and went home.

This evening I decided I would put a cam out at my local wma at a creek bottom funnel.
I crossed the first creek and walked a old logging road torward where I planned to put the cam.

I stepped my left foot over a 3 foot long copperhead. I look straight down between my legs this thing is laying sideways across the logging road. I've got my left foot a foot infront of him and my right foot behind him.

My though was no way I can go backwards as soon as I move my right foot he is bound to strike me. I knew I had no choice and stepped over him.

He never strikes or even moved.
Never tried to get away or anything.

I got a safe 8 or so feet away and tried to calm myself down . Thought I was going to have a heart attack.obviously I headed right back to the car and left. I was soooooo lucky the copperhead was chill and never coiled up or struck.

I definitely got lucky.

He blended in soo good with the leaves I never saw him until he was between my legs.

Whew!!! Man now that’s the stuff I hate about early season

Glad you were able to get out safe
I would’ve had two movements at the exact same time!!
1. Physical movement getting out of there
2. Bowel movement

I was just talking to my dad the other day that I had seen so few snakes this year while scouting and putting out cams. I've ran into less then 10 all year so far. Being in the woods everyday I definitely like to see them before I get close to them. King snake today I saw him probably 10 -15 feet infront of me I just avoided him. I wasn't happy to see him but not really scared.

I hate the ones that surprise me.

I had a garter snake in my blind. Does that count? Lol, one of the perks of hunting Michigan. We don't have to much stuff that will kill you or eat you. Glad you didn't take a hit !!

Glad that went well! I hate snakes for that exact reason, seems like by the time I see them, I am about to step on them. I've seen enough rattlers in Montana to be real paranoid now.

I had my irish setter snake boots on today.

My last pair of Irish setters and Rockys worked I just hope I never need to test this pair.

Wow, definitely glad you didn't get bit! I once stepped and had my foot about six inches in front of a copperheads head before I noticed him. Jumped away and he never moved at all.

Always had heard growing up how aggressive copperheads were but after me and my brother stood six inches from one by mistake and it never even flinch I started to wonder. Did a little reading on them and apparently even if you step on one a lot of the time they’ll give a false bite, not injecting any venom. Still don’t like them though

If I was in snake country,,, I would absolutely have a few good pair of snake boots. Nothing too scary like that in the woods of MA here... Our issues come more from insects... Ticks that carry all kinds of nasty diseases, and we got a tone of them... But also mosquitos... They carry EEE up here and that will kill you...

I've only seen a couple of copperheads since moving to Kentucky. Left for work the other morning to find a dead one at the end of my driveway. I think something ate the head, it was gone, but the body was intact. Good reminder that they are still around...this one 150 yards from the house!
I haven't ran into one in the woods, yet, but am sure to wear my gaiters when I go.

Irish setter Vaprtreks. I’ve run a pile of snake boots. They are the only thing I run now. Generally get 3 seasons out of them before they get to where they can’t be sealed. I have 6 year old pair I wear around the property at the house they leak like a mother, but haven’t fallen apart.
