Great job, and getting an antelope with a bow for your first out of state hunt is awesome. Did you spot and stalk or hunt over water?

Over water and then bumped and stalked it a few times until it expired

Umm sure? I feel like I’ve already posted it here though so isn’t that overkill?

Well your response came after I posted that, but a little story recapping the plan, what happened, how you had to adjust and how you sealed the deal would be nice for all of us who weren’t on the trip with you. No biggie if you don’t want to.

The morning started off cool which was a relief. Hunting in a blind in August is a taxing thought. Saw a number of beautiful animals wandering around the prairie all morning but nothing came up to the water that I was sitting on.

I pondered all morning about what to do about size, figuring I’d know what to do in the moment if the moment ever came. Soon some fawns came in to take a drink. Then some more. Then a doe and behind her two bucks. One was shorter than the ears and one was bigger.

I still wondered. What am I going to do here. If this thing comes in am I going to take it? Well, I can at least practice drawing back in the blind and seeing if my movement spooks em, then I’ll know for if the time really comes.

The fawns wouldn’t get out of the way. The bigger of the two bucks was down at the water taking a drink. 20 yards away and these fawns wouldn’t move so that i could safely practice drawing back.

Now I’m mad. And in a split second I figured that I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. I want to go home with meat, i want to have accomplished this. There’s plenty of time next time I go antelope hunting to get picky. I figured it out at the right moment because it was like the parting of the Red Sea. All of a sudden the fawns split and moved out of the way. Clear broadside shot at 20 yards. Asking myself “are you certain you want to take this animal” yes. Released. Clean pass through and poof theyre off.

I busted out of the blind and started to follow. Was i following the right one? I confirmed that with a blood trail. Hanna met up with me and then later Oren. We got to the crest of the hill, poof again. Jumped him. Sprinting across the prairie we kept eyes on him. He crested a hill and bedded down in a bowl. I got to the edge he was nearest to and started crawling. I couldn’t see him but i got to 45 yds just as i peaked over the hill he stood and I flung another arrow.

Did ya know antelope are fast?

We kept on him to the next bowl where we took a pause. He took a pause as well. It was about 90 degrees so it was a well deserved break on both ends. We started strategizing a plan. Circle around him and all move in. That’s what we were set on. He put his head down. Wait it out? Head popped back up.

He put his head down and up a number of times. He was getting weak. Hanna went up on the rise to my left. Oren went into the draw on the right and kept a gas valve shed between him and the antelope, creeping forward to throw another arrow in him. I kept eyes on the buck the whole time. The head never came back up.
