2021 Walleye Discussion

Unread postby isitseasonyet? » Wed Jun 09, 2021 4:43 am

Growing up fishing it was usually “whatever will bite” “wherever we drive the boat” type of fishing. Lots of pike.

However when we occasionally caught walleye it was a big deal. Last year I decided to start learning more about walleye and how to catch em. And I am getting better! (Still not good  ) Learning patterns and how to read electronics

I struggle with Jigs and shallow water in the spring. But when the water starts to warm up and the fish move out to the 15-20’ range I start to get more consistent dragging spinners and live bait rigs.

This we picked up a few in 15’ of water. 68-72deg water temp, Gold spinners, crawlers, 1.2 mph. 5’ leader. Nothing huge but some good eaters!

If you are so inclined, go ahead and share your walleye pics and what they are biting on. Depth, water temp, colors, bait, speed, method ect!

This may help people develop patterns to put more fish in the boat:

Great thread to start!! My brother and I are also trying to become walleye guys. Been at it for the last few years.
We too struggle in the spring with shallow water stuff because it seems to rely more on reading electronics.
This year in general has been tough but the best time is right now-end of June.
Will definitely post up if we find em!!

Walleye (or any fish really) are more likely to strike on the suspension of the jig even if it’s a quick jig. In shallows a jointed rapala tends to nag em just enough otherwise jigging is my fav. Color makes a difference. I tend to go with something that’s combined with glo or white. A night crawler is good otherwise it depends on the water you’re fishing and the jigging technique you’re using. Anything from chartreuse to dark blue w sparkles depending on the circumstances for me.

Boat control is the biggest key for jigging

Saginaw bay eye's from last week, most on crawler harnesses 18fow. I will be following this, I'm hoping to travel up to your part of the country this july to fish some of them famous walleye lakes you have.

For vertical jigging yes i agree 100%. For cast and retrieve jigging that doesn’t matter.

Where I’m at in w Michigan it’s all about nite fishing for walleye. Daytime is pretty hit or miss. Usually I’m jigging or casting blade baits in spring. Fall im trolling shallow flats or the channel. Jig raps off drop offs work great too. Later Summer time here Ill troll weed edges 15-20 ft. with spinners and pick up a couple. Water is fairly stained over here so I'll use fire tiger patterns. Clean water Ill use Blue or Purple with Silver. Other than that I go to east side of state to Lake Erie and Detroit river a few times throughout the year. It’s lights out over there. Just have play around with colors but it doesn't take long.

Pretty hard to pitch 1/8 ounce jigs with a cross wind and feel a bite with bow in your line, still have to positon your boat to pitch up to the fish and give yourself the best chance to feel the bite.

Nothing better than wading a small local river for some eyes. Small jig and a crawler in the deep holes along the bends. Absolute blast

I’ve caught mostly eaters this year (15-17”) but i did just place a $150 order for some custom jigs. Nothing fancy just different colors and sizes some with glow. I’ll post a pic when they all come in. I was really happy with the last small batch the guy made me and that stock is dwindling down so it was time

Went out trolling lake poygan a couple weekends ago. All of a sudden we heard crying and sirens and i guess some dude died in the water and they couldn’t find him. We spent the rest of the evening driving around looking for him on the graph. We got out of the water at 9:55 and he was found at 10:00. To be honest I’m glad we weren’t there for it but I’m so glad he was found for the family’s sake. I did not want to fish there the next day so we went out on a creek in the canoe and we caught some nice perch. Bass. Lots of sheepshead. Saw a ton of gar and when i hooked into one of the perch a northern came and took it for a ride. Wasn’t able to reel em both in at the same time but it was awesome to see.
