The Hunting Beast

I know from past post that there are a few Esox junkies on here. If you would, please tell me where most of your literature or media education has come from.
I know that this is two part, information and proper application(book smart/ lake smart).

I just started Muskie fishing last year and have acquired 90% of the tools needed. Now need to increase my knowledge of the species to a deeper level.

I recommend Musky Hunter magazine. Great source of info from some of the best musky guys out there. I especially enjoy Joe Bucher's moon secrets updated with peak times in every issue.

Any books or forums in peticular?
Are there tips or insight to nailing down a good guide. I would do that in a heart beat. Heck! Just a few days with one would pay for itself in unproductive trip trade.

I have a pretty extensive collection of books and videos on musky fishing. If you want I can list some of the best ones later when I get a chance.

Musky Hunter also has an online forum. It's not near as busy as this forum but I still pick up things from guys there. We have some pretty accomplished musky guys here and hope they chime in. Steve Heiting is the managing editor over there at Musky Hunter and is also a Beast member.

Based on what I've read, it seems as though I need a similar approach to Muskie fishing as mature buck hunting.

Any information an accomplished Muskie fisherman can lead me to would be well appreciated.

Muskies on the Shield is a good overall read, even if you don't spend a ton of time in the shield.

Not as much tactical, but Time on the Water is a spectacular read for the working man. It is one of most inspiring pieces of fishing literature I've ever read.

Just got back from a week of musky fishing. Be careful once you get hooked it's hard to fish for anything else. Like they say "all other fish are just bait".

The best book I have by far is Musky Strategy by Tom Gelb.

Nothing like 50 years of musky fishing experience and he is not afraid to share his secrets.

Being active in a local musky club like Muskies Inc can speed up the learning curve quite a bit. Since joining the board of my local chapter, I've shared my boat and hopped in boats of others and have learned a ton. Just like mature buck hunting, you have to have an open mind and be willing to try new things. I've learned what I'm good at and also what I need to work on by fishing with other people.

The one piece of advice I like to give newbies to the sport is to fish deeper. Most guys are used to fishing bass and pike up on the weed flats. I notice it's hard for guys that are converting from those kinds of fish to muskies because they just aren't fishing deep enough. Get you boat at least a casting length out from the outside weed edge. Next time through, go even another cast length out. And, don't be afraid to get out in the open water basin. They are out there, and that's where a lot of the big girls spend a lot of time.

That's what I am looking for guys. There seems to be some "okay" instructional videos out there and since I am moving forward with this, I would rather apply my money off referrals.
