Iraq Carp (2008)
It's sad how many photos have been lost to this board because of the changes to photo bucket, so I'ma add one I think is cool. This is one of my favorite pictures, despite me looking like a goofy kid. This was taken in the final week of my deployment to Iraq in 2008 on Victory base complex (LSA Liberty West). Our mission was already handed over and we weren't even supposed to be there anymore, but flight kept getting grounded in Kuwait because of sandstorms. The fish was caught out of "Z" lake. I caught it on a chunk of apple cinnamon muffin formed around a treble hook with stacked squares of cut up Styrofoam coffee cup pinched between split shots as a float.

That's awesome! A lot of soldiers have deployed to Iraq but you are the only one I've ever known to have been successfully fishing. Congrats!
Be original and Enjoy every step along the adventure.

There wasn't a lot of time to do it, but every once in a while we'd get some down time for one reason or another and I'd throw a line into a canal for an hour or so. I hit it hard that that last week when we didn't have a mission and it paid off well with this guy.

Thats pretty cool. At FOB Blessing in Afghanistan we were on the Pesh river and i always wanted to fish it. Fast flowing river with lots of hydraulics, wouldve been tough fishing but wouldve been nice to see what it was holding.

Thank you for your service! I was there in 2003, just so happened my duties kept me where I belong. In the rear with the gear!

I feel you there. VBC was one of Saddam's old palace complexes so we had lakes and canals all over the place. Still it took forever to get my hands on any kind of fishing gear. Eventually traded for some from a TCN.

Looked pretty darn good to me on the end of my line

Dunno, with the end of my deployment at hand I wasn't willing to risk eating an unfamiliar fish from unfamiliar water.

Re: Iraq Carp (2008)
I worked there as a contractor in 2010-11. I tried fishing some of the canals around VBC. I could see a lot of fish from the bridges. I was after what looked like catfish. I only got out for a couple hours one afternoon, no luck. I had to get my gear online.we got most of our stuff that way over there. lol. I was just hand lining with hook and sinker. Having a rod would have been fun, but like you say not a lot of free time.

Cool! I was at Liberty west in 09-10. I wish I had a pic but one of our guys ran over and killed a huge bobcat looking critter with a bongo bus near antenna hill. Some one said it was one of saddam's escaped pets. ?? Kinda freaky since I used to run laps every night around antenna hill. We also shot some gnarly looking wild pigs on our FOB in 2004-05.
