Whaler
Wasn’t sure where to put this. Figured it’s fishing related
I don’t want to call it a Whaler restoration
The boy and I are just going to make a functional hull
1965 13’ Boston Whaler.
Prior owner sealed up the bow locker, glassed in 3 chunks of wood on the deck for a helm and poling platform.
Then the entire boat is rolled with what I suspect is 15 coats of gel coat
The start 8 days ago
The boy scraping the easy stuff (sitting on what should be the bow locker)
Pressure washed helped a ton on the non-skid
The locker revealed!
He’s happy it’s in decent shape. He was hoping we would be able to bring back the mahogany hatch

Re: Whaler
We started with the grinding
It’s going to be quite tedious and time consuming so there won’t be a ton of progress pics
Hard at work
And then, last night him and his buddy went shark fishing, but the boy opted to go oyster diving instead.
Now my laborer is out a solid week or so
No sutures luckily. But lots of debris removal and irrigating
Hopefully no infections.
Luckily we aren’t on any timeline.

Hopefully he doesn’t get any infections!
Maybe he should move to a more supervisory role on the project

Lol
I have to say, he had been driving me and himself to get this done. I was impressed. I would be inside working (work work) he’d go outside , a bit later come and get me to show me what he did on his own.
Funny how motivated one of today’s kids can be

Re: Whaler
I like it!
Looking forward to seeing the progress. I admit that I would probably stay away from such a basket case, so I’m interested to see how it goes.

Yeah that is some tough time consuming work if done right.

Your son is putting in the work!
I gotta ask, how’d a Florida young man become a KY fan? Maybe it’s just a grub work shirt?

Well, travel ball and HS football kicked in.
And he got a new (used) boat that works.
He did do some more grinding but then we had to move it up to the property 4 hours away to make room for the new boat.
I do have to add, the neigbor had a new baby. We all live on 50x100 lots. With @ 8’ between us. Her porch would get COVERED in ground gel-coat. She kinda mentioned something about it. So we ceased operations here until we moved it to the property.
Funny this thread was brought up, he said on winter break we need to grind and sand in between deer hunting this
Winter.
