Man I bet the weight and fight of the fish coupled with the undertow of the waves made that a forearm burner

It was super hot on Saturday but we had that storm and the front come through that night and the temp dropped to about 55 plus you have 55 degree ocean temp and onshore wind. it can get pretty chilly sitting on the beach.

Nothing fancy. We run 20# test on a 7' medium/heavy rod and a 4 or 500 series reel and run a two hook rig (2/0 hooks) tied onto the main line with a barrel swivel using 50# test. We leave a tail for a snap swivel on the end of the rig for a big triangle weight. the size of the weight depends on how rough the water is. Most guys use a big surf casting rod 9'-12' but you don't have to get it out really far. All the fish usually hit right behind the breaking waves. Its also really fun casting top water plugs if you see the birds diving. And we used fresh finger mullet for bait. big black drums are hitting off the surf as well and you use big clams for those. they can get up 80+ pounds but the are infested with parasitic worms once the water temp hits a certain point.
Funny story with this fish is that you use a sand spike to hold your rod up and we grill and drink beers and hang out. Pretty chill fishing. Anyhow, the fish hit and ripped the rod out of the holder and started dragging the rod onto the surf. My cousin took off after if and got a hold of the rod and had it hooked up. it was scrapping really hard and he wasn't sure if it was a big skate (stingray) because they feel like you are pulling up the bottom. but once it got close we saw the body roll than the head and his brother just jumped in the water with some jeans on and that was that.
Catching them off the surf is pretty cool and mostly an early season thing. Come December you have to hop on the boat and hit the ocean. we troll for them over underwater sand bars with big diving crankbaits that swim 30' plus feet. Some guys jig for them with various baits. Live eels are really popular. It been rough the last couple of years on the ocean run.
Here a couple I caught two winters ago. Freaking slobs and unbelievable eats.

And here's another that my cousin caught a couple years ago.

Back in the day, that was my prime fish, they shut it down and then opened it while i was in college and had a 36-inch size limit.

We got our fish most nights, my best was 44 inches. Live lining eels at night on the rockpiles in long island sound and rhode island.

Best fish ever.
