Costa Rica dream trip

Unread postby UntouchableNess » Sun Sep 11, 2016 11:57 am

Starting on my bucket list, hopefully early! Always dreamed of billfishing as a kid growing up in Iowa reading the national magazines of the day (Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield).

Julie and I flew down to Liberia, Costa Rica on August 30th, final destination was Tamarindo, with the boat chartered through Go Fish Costa Rica. We had an awesome day on the water. We had intermittent showers, which might have helped the bite. The crew caught mackerel, small yellow fin tuna and a rainbow runner while trying to get live bait. We moved on to trolling for billfish, mahi mahi (dorado) and tuna. We had two marlin hit bait without getting hooked, missed a sailfish then hooked a sail. I caught a small dorado, two sharks then Julie caught a huge dorado. We had the twin to Julie's dorado alongside the boat on the trip back in, but the hook pulled out before it could be gaffed. Oh well, we still had two one gallon ziplock bags full of mahi steaks to take to local restaurants the next 4 days and didn't need the meat. :L: The rest of the fish we gave to the boat crew.

That is awesome. I dream to go to Costa Rica as well, but my trip would be to go surfing!

We flew in Aug 30, out Sept 6th. We could have made it shorter, but we had a beach front walk out room at a resort for a romantic get-a-way. Also, had time to eat the fish we caught.

The weather was hot and humid with evening thunderstorms. I heard it gets worse as September progresses, with October being a wash out. I'd recommend going the last two weeks of August, first week of Sept.

My wife and i are headed down after Deer season to visit her dad. He moved there after passing on his glass business to his brother. We are looking forward to it. Fly out February 8th.

It's worth the trip. I used to spend way too much time down there on the east coast chasing waves in the winter.
