Big Fish = Big Bait!

Unread postby mrjbigfoot » Sun Nov 28, 2010 10:24 am

When you want to catch seriously big fish, it starts with catching seriously big bait! And when you consider my buds in Florida do all of this using kayaks, from the beach, it's amazing!

Here's the bait! :o

LOL! I wanna catch a big shark from the beach! I've caught a few decent ones off the pier and had a big one spool me from the beach last year.. it's just to fun to kick back on the beach with some cold ones, having the guys run the baits out with kayaks & drop them a couple hundred yards off shore.

Would of never thought you could pull one that size in from shore! Very cool. What do you do with one after you catch it?

For the good guys, it's all catch, tag & release. The guys I fish with turn in all their catch & tag data to FSU and so do a whole faction of the land based shark fishermen in Florida. On the darker side, there is a big market for shark and shark fins..

I've seen some big bait before, and I subscibe to the big bait = big fish, but dang, that's the biggest bait I've ever seen!!

Are you going there this winter Mike? You usually go every year. That arm better heal if you are, or Chris will have to do all the reeling.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

We've been going down every year in March, when Chris is off school but my daughter is pregnant with out 1st grandbaby and she's due at that same time.. So, we may try to back it up & go to Florida a little later in early June which is a better time to catch Tarpon! ;)

No way in heck could I stand that close to shark...on shore or not. That thing is huge.

Two things I'm almost deathly afraid of, sharks and snakes....can't stand either one of them and I freak out when my son scares me with grass snakes.

Depending on the size & type of the shark, fights can last anywhere from 15-20 minutes to a couple of hours. The big hammer just about spooled them on that 12/0 reel & took every bit of a couple hours to get in. And just to make it clear on the bait, they actually cut up that big Amber jack into 3 chunks of cut bait, splayed out/filleted into the spine to make it nice & bloody which tends to work best. Type of shark playes a role to, big hammers will sometimes fight to their own death which can be sad because they'd really rather let them go and when your way out on an isolated beach, it's not like you can pick up a 600-700 lb shark & carry it back to the truck. Most beaches do not allow vehicles out on the beach.. So then it gets down to having to cut it up and pack it out in pieces to make use of all the meat. Folks that like to eat sharks prefer to keep the smaller ones that generate good size steaks & can be cut up & packed right into the cooler. A lot of the pier guys will only keep a shark to eat if it's hooked bad & going to die anyways. Most of them prefer to eat some of the bait fish they catch like nicer sized Spanish Makeral.

these guys invented it... they are crazy!! usually skates and rays are the best and typical baits, but anything works.... tuna heads are most guys favorites.

i catch makos blues and threshers deep sea chumming... but never off shore, down south on the east cost it poplular with certain types.

next year im bowfishing for sharks... plan to shoot a big mako.

Yes, cut up skates & rays make great bait but the shore fishermen use cut jacks a lot to because of the blood red meat and they also use bonita and/or macks/ladyfish depending on what they can catch from shore, the intercoastal or piers.

;)
