Back to the subject... I personally think your better off with no decoy and setting up on the searching coyote rather than having one eyeing the deke from a distance till they get educated. My most successful set ups are on yotes that had no way of ever seeing the area the call comes from. They are not shot by the caller, but by the shooter placed 75 to 150 yards downwind where they circle.
Yotes are not human, they depend on there nose, not there eyes.

Sam, I would like to see your decoy... Got any pic's? Also wondering about your set ups. I am by no means an expert at yote hunting, but so far I have seen no need for decoys in any of my hunting. In most cases like deer and turkey my results have been worse than with no deke at all... Sure, some instances, and situations it would work better, I mean over all.
Funny observation I made on opening day of duck season this year. I was hunting in the marsh out of a tree stand and could of shot 10 times my limit in ducks. Over the cattails I could view the marsh and see all the decoy set ups. As the ducks would fly in the majority would avoid the decoy spreads like the plague. I was looking at a couple spots where no one was hunting, including the spot I was at and a hunter with no decoys would have out shot the decoy hunters 10 to 1... Now, I am not a duck hunter, and I know decoys are a big part of duck hunting, but it was very eye opwening to see the obvious avoidance of decoys on opening day.
Like I said earlier, with coyotes I am not an expert. So maybe you can teach me something I don't know?
I personally can't think of any set up with a rifle that would of been better with a decoy.

Well, you don't need a decoy to kill a turkey, but sometimes they work.

You don't need a decoy to kill a deer, but sometimes they work.

I don't coyote hunt that much, but I would assume the same.

It sounds like the OP wants to try a deek. So far there have only been about two answers for him.....So back to the topic...

Unless you hunt with and without deeks, and have killed 100 or more yotes, you aren't really qualified to say wheather or not they work......

That being said, I have seen those things that look like squirrel tail that move around. But I have not personally tried one.

I doubt anybody who answered has killed 100 or more yotes...
However, I did not see where anybody stated that decoys do or do not work. In my case, I simply stated I have not seen a need for them in my hunting. If it is working well for someone I for one, would like to learn more about why its working and under what circumstances.

I know of a number of groups in my neck of the woods who specialize in yote hunting. They kill 100+ yotes some years and many of them personally have easily taken 100+. The way they do it is driving. They walk open sections and push yotes across to the opposite side where the shooters wait. Deadly and very simple approach. I believe they use radios too.

I don't know why I replied to this thread, since I don't seriously coyote hunt. I'm nowhere near qualified to even post on this thread...

The ones I get are mostly on deer hunts....

Now here is exactly why I love these discussions - new ways of thinking. I like this idea, Dan, I think you have a great point I never really considered. If they have the decoy in their line of sight, from what I have seen more times than not is a stalking yote who enters the field in one place and makes one appearance.

I suppose the idea of the yote searching for the source of the disturbance may offer more opportunities to see the animal and perhaps from even closer proximities in some instances.

Maybe both have their advantages and disadvantages.

..My responses aren't meant to be offensive, they are prodders at threads with potential that could wind up dead with simple responses. You don't use a decoy... WHY?

Now we know.

So, Sam, what do you use for a decoy, and how do you set up with one?

I've used anything from a frozen rabbit to a frozen rabbit on a rope. A buddy who I do a lot of yote hunting with has the Mojo Fuzzy Critter that is basically a furry battery operated object with a little wire sticking up with more fur on it. It's spastic and simulates a rabbit freaking out - sort of like when you shoot them with a BB gun.

Main idea is having a "source" to the call, so when the lurking predator peers through the sage grass at the object in the open snow laiden field, his comfort level jumps and he hopefully begins his slow stalk, or I've even had them full out run right to the decoy before I could get on him. They have done everything from straight attack to get up close to it and then shy away, but usually they stop to give it a double take before trotting off if they don't like their closer look. . . Enough time to pop off a shot.

I've hunted yotes since I was a boy with my father, and every year since, and one thing I grew sick of was when backing out or moving locations after a sit was fresh tracks. I figured I had them in with the call, but hunting under moonlight with snow backing, many times it's hard to see them unless their silhouetted by the blank snowy field. . . I needed a way to get them out of the thicket where they were spying on the "noise" in order to have a chance.

I quickly tried a frozen rabbit and it worked the first time. It doesn't always work, and they don't always see a frozen rabbit sitting still, but I can't imagine it ever hurt me - only helped.

I think my buddies mojo furry critter is the ticket. That thing really works, just like the mojo mallard decoys bring huge flocks down from way up there.
