Scouting pictures from today

Unread postby Mountain Man » Sun Mar 28, 2010 3:47 pm

I spent a few hours scouting today. I found one isolated bed that I believe is a buck bed, some other beds, and three treestands from other hunters.

Below are some pictures of the buck bed. The bed is on a small piece of high ground right next to a bush. I drew a green line showing the trail to the main land. The first picture shows the location of the bed. Note the bush just to the left of the bed.

Here is a picture of the bed.

This picture shows a lot of hair in the bed.

There was a rub off to the side about 15-20 feet from the bed.

Here is a picture of one of the other beds I found.

Here are the three treestands I found. The last one also had a set of climbing sticks near it.

After a good day of scouting sometimes you get lucky and find a shed.

Nice pics, thanks for posting them.
How do you feel when you find stands still up?
It annoys me some.
One from today.

You're welcome. It annoys me too. All of the stands were chained to the trees and looked like they had been left over the winter.

On the bright side I now know where others are hunting and based on those stand locations I have an idea on how they approach those stands.

I actually like finding other peoples stands. It tells me exactly where they are camped. Since I can't smell where humans have been like a deer, I need some sort of visual. If I am finding other hunters stands, I know I am in the wrong area. Lazy people who leave stands up on public are the same type of people who will hunt that stand every weekend in most cases. I would consider it a plus in my scouting to know exactly where those buck avoidance spots are. The downfall is if they had to take the stand down and set it up every day they likely would not be hunting far enough back to annoy you.

I agree with Dan, it's a dead giveaway from where they are hunting all the time. Also when I lived in the UP baiting was rampant from 90% of hunters so it was also very easy to find where people were camped out. The bait pile sites would be scarred out in the ground and easy to spot. When I started going back in on foot (away from ATV trails) more than 15 minutes I found I was all alone.

Seems like a ton of people leave their stands up in PA, especially on the private land. I like it cause I know where they will be also. And judging by their stand height and set up if they are even anyone I will be competing with. I think few people use sticks and hang-on here too, mostly climbers. Meaning they need bigger trees. A lot of the points in the swamps have stands in the hardwoods. I've only found a couple stands ever actually out in the swamps.

nice pics and a bonus shed. I dont find very many stands on public but I can always tell where they were by brush cuttings and tree peg holes.
