To the guys using DSD or Zink decoys..

Unread postby cornfedkiller » Fri Jun 10, 2011 2:07 pm

Do you feel the super realistic, expensive decoys like the DSDs or Zinks make a difference? Would you say that they have pulled in birds that you dont think would've otherwise committed?

I am happy with my Primos Killer-B, but my submissive hen and feeding hen are just cheap collapsible rubber ones from gander. Do you guys think it would make a difference if I "upgraded" to nicer ones?

Also, do you guys with DSDs find it a PITA lugging non-collapsible decoys out into the field with you, or are they not too bad?

This was my first year with DSD's and it was actually easier to carry them than my normal load. Last year I carried a strutter decoy and 4 "collapsible" decoys every time in and out. This year I had my new strutter "BigBoi" to carry by hand with his handle and the 2 DSD's on the pack, MUCH lighter than 5 deeks.

As far as how well they worked... well, the stuffed decoy was what killed the birds this year so I can't say much on my own end BUT I have several buddies whose success has gone up leaps and bounds once they switched to DSD's.

Without a doubt the DSD's will make a difference. Any decoy will bring in a bird, but for the bowhunter you need a decoy that will bring in and HOLD the bird in your setup long enough to get a shot off. I know that birds around here can be very smart when it comes to decoys, and if it's a cheap foam decoy they will not hang around, or even come in close enough for a shot. Since using DSD's I have had numerous birds come in and interact with my decoys........toms, jakes and most of all hens. Here are just a few of the birds that have come in because of the decoy alone....there was really no calling involved with bringing these birds in.......

As far as transporting, they are not bad to carry......put them in a decoy bag and throw it over your shoulder, or do like I do and bungee it to your pack over your blind. They weigh next to nothing, so weight isn't really a factor. They are more bulky to carry than "fold ups," but their effectiveness easily makes up for it.

I hunt with DSD decoys on all public land and they are flat out awesome

best decoys out there in my opinion

the turkeys I hunt have seen all the cheapo foam decoys and are very wary....they usually come right over to at least get a look at the DSD decoys when they see them in a field set

I was using cheapos but I painted them to look more real. My feeder looks pretty darn good. I just got the zink looker for xmas. It was on sale for $50 so I added it to my wish list and it showed up. Its a nice decoy for sure. Its gotta help turkeys have great vision.

Used my cabelas points and got myself a DSD upright hen.. Im excited to try her out this season!

I'll probably end up getting the submissive or feeding hen for my birthday in May. Anyone have a suggestion on which I should get next?

DSD are awesome...I have the upright hen the feeder and the jake and have called in a lot of birds with them...there also a tough decoy...my brothers girlfriend shot a tom over one of my hens and shot the decoy with about 20 bbs and no paint has chipped off...overall there great decoys for the buy and are comparable to a mounted bird

Which would you guys recommend, the upright hen or the feeding hen? With My other decoys I have noticed that toms tend to hang up or get skiddish if I have a upright hen out. Like they are looking around for what the hen is looking at

I have the DSD upright and feeding hen, wouldn't have it any other way. If I had to choose one over the other I'd probably get the upright over the feeder, its easier to see for the gobblers. The DSD are in a class by themselves, the upright wont spook em like a foam upright.

ive got a cheap feeder that to me looks as good as the zink, damn close anyhow. some things ive noticed about it... vanishes in tall grass. the bad part about a looker is, usually that body posture means something is up.

Yeah, if I were to get one decoy it'd be the Jake.
