Black Bear Stats via Pope And Young

There were 595 entires In the last recording period (2009 through 2010).

Style of hunting

Top 3
65% of these bear were shot over bait.
10% were shot while sitting In a tree stand without bait.
5% were shot spot and stalk.

Time of day

Top 3
55% were shot between 6:00 PM to dark.
17% were shot between 4 PM to 6 PM.
8% were shot In the morning

Shot distance

Top 3
52% were shot between 10 to 19 yards.
22% were shot between 20 to 29 yards.
3% were shot at 1 to 9 yards.

Age of hunter

Top 3
37% are between the ages of 40 to 49 years old.
23% are between 30 to 39 years old.
21% are between 50 to 59 years old.

Years of experience

Top 3
42% have 25+ years of bear hunting experience.
10% have 20 to 24 years of bear hunting experience.
7% have 10 to 14 years of experience.

cool and interesting stats, Schultzy- I think they are reflective of what I would have thought to be true, but having your information really brings certain factors to light. The style of hunting, time of day taken, and shot distance were very close to what I would have assumed. The age of the hunter and years of experience would certainly seem to fit, as you would expect your P & Y successful hunters to be older and experienced in the bear woods... but these last two I think we need to look a little closer at. Like many aspects of hunting, the average age is increasing in bear hunting too. I have some bear hunting buddies that have done quite a bit to introduce young hunters to the sport- I feel obligated to do the same if the opportunity arises. 8-)

Very interesting, Great Information, . I finally recieved the score of the biggest bear shot at my camp last year, 466lbs 20 6/16 8-)
