What's your dpsm?

Unread postby Grizzlyadam » Thu Dec 24, 2020 1:46 pm

What's your dpsm in the areas you are hunting? I'm in the northwest corner of Connecticut and the areas I hunt have about 10-15 dpsm. Just curious as to what the average beast member is dealing with as far as population density goes.

Is dpsm = deer per square mile?

This is a few years old and sure they haven’t changed much but numbers are questionable at best.

I never put too much stock into the DNR’s estimated deer numbers. Always seem way overinflated compared to the real world hunter observations

I showed my county a few years ago. Was extremely low like .5 or something. My beef was if they calculate removing wide open areas, rural town, and such. I don’t believe so in my case. But the numbers sure make me feel good about myself  In all honesty given my income and lack of quality public in my area I feel severely low deer numbers are a blessing. Usually limited doe harvest mixed with antler restrictions keeps a pretty dang tight sex ratio, more than enough quality farm field food. For a working guy it gives you a chance for a real trophy based on antlers. Mainly cause the folks with money don’t have the guts to grind it out day after day. They pay for greener pasture. No complaints from me.

Yeah I’d say this chart is a joke at best attempting to get hunters to kill more deer .

I couldn’t find a county breakdown but found a state avg that said 1.1 bucks per sq mile for Florida. I’m going to have to do a little more digging I am kinda curious now to find a by county breakdown.

Hard to say. There are a lot of deer but they’re in pockets. I don’t think the dnr knows and I can’t go off what hunters say much either cus most of em sit up wind of a bait pile everyday and then complain there’s no deer around

Latest Mississippi numbers show 38 dpsm. Seems high to me, but when I start overlaying a square mile area on places I hunt, it’s very possibly correct when season opens. Kicker is that there is cover everywhere and three months of gun season. Don’t really see double digit numbers of deer on hunts except January on big food plots on hard cold fronts afternoons. Liable to see 15-20 on those sits.

I’ve hunted MS, KS, MO, and KY. KY, seemed to have the most deer. MO and MS fairly even. KS a good bit lower.

The last time my State Forested had an infrared study completed, there was 10-12 dpsm. The population is very patchy.

Hey neighbor! Just curious where you were able to find that info. I tried looking for it on the CT DEEP website but couldn’t find dpsm. I probably overlooked it somewhere
