Drenalin 2020 Buck #2

Unread postby Drenalin » Sat Nov 28, 2020 6:26 am

Got permission earlier this week to hunt a piece of private I used to have access to. Place was bought and clear cut last year. I went in Wednesday to hunt/scout. Deer are running all over the logging roads and of course bedding and feeding in the clear cut areas. There’s a saddle where the neighboring property joins, which I saw a couple of deer moving through Wednesday. That property has not been logged, and there appears to be a fair bit of oaks on it. Just inside the neighbor’s fence, there was a large rub, maybe a 3-1/2” diameter tree rubbed from the ground to about belly button height. There’s a three way intersection of logging roads in that saddle as well.

I left the house this morning assuming that most of our good rut activity (for hunting) is pretty much over. So I planned on shooting the first doe I saw, and maybe a second if I got the opportunity. But on the way there, I saw three bucks crossing roads with their noses to the ground. “Hmmm, maybe I should hold out for a buck today,” I thought. I set up 90 yards above the saddle right at legal light on a good crosswind, undecided on whether I was shooting the first doe I saw or waiting for a racked buck.

About half an hour after sunrise, I spotted movement on the neighbor’s property. Buck! Good buck! I settled in behind the rifle and watched to see what he would do. He worked that rub, then moved off down the ridge before turning to come back. At this point, I’m willing him to jump the fence so I can take him. We moved down the ridge and crossed where the fence was down, then marched back into the saddle.

The shot was quartering away, right at 95 yards. I had my pack in front of me for a rest and squeezed off a perfect shot. The buck dropped, struggled to get up and floundered down the ridge maybe 15 yards. A few kicks, and he expired. I gave it just a few minutes and headed down to get my hands on him.

Up till about a week ago, this would have been my best buck to date, and this first time I’ve ever filled both my buck tags in a season. I couldn’t be happier with how things have gone this year!

I only had to move him about half a mile, but since it was uphill I decided to load him on my pack instead of dragging him. I’ll never do that again - every deer from now on gets quartered before packing, or they get dragged.

GREAT JOB Drenalin
Huge Congrats to you on the season and the bucks you have taken.

I think I know who I am going to call if I ever kill another deer
Call would go something like "Hey D, bring that pack and carry one out for me brother"
