Buck Drinking Habits

Unread postby AndreSaavedra » Sat Oct 31, 2020 2:36 pm

If anyone can help out I would really appreciate it, I know that there are a lot of variables of what I am about to ask but your input would be invaluable.

1. Do bucks drink water right after they get up in the evening?
2. How far do they usually bed away from drinkable water?
3. How often do they drink during a typical day of lets say 60°
4. If they had a choice would they drink from a stream with cover or a lake with less cover.

Thank you.

I can't answer all of these.
But I have seen bucks go to water when they leave a bed in the afternoon.

Usually water is 40-200 yards depends on the spot in the area i hunt. Obviously in Kansas or Texas would be different i think. If its very warm like 90 plus they go get a drink midday and go back to bed.

They don't like leaving their safe zone.
I'm not sure how much they target water during cold weather , or rut cruising.

The bucks I have seen drink at small puddles or large creeks. We have so much rain here water is everywhere.

I believe I read somewhere that deer get around 70% of their daily water through what they eat. Early season is typically when I see most deer purposefully going to water to drink. Other than that during hard chasing during the rut has been the other most effective time for me to hunt a drinking spot

I am also of the belief that they get most of the water they need through their food. The exception would be abnormally hot and dry conditions but even then food trumps water imo. I only have experience in the Northeast it may be totally different in more dry areas where hydration is not as easy to come by.
