Identifying a Nut

Unread postby AndreSaavedra » Tue Aug 25, 2020 2:04 am

Hey guys sorry to bother you can anyone tell me what nuts are these and do deer eat them. On the other side it's just one sample but is it Parmesans? Thank you.

What did the tree and the leaf look like? Are they very hard? Kind of looks like hickory nuts but hard to tell from a blurry pic with no other info.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

Looks like one of the hickory nuts. Hard to tell which one with the blurry pictures. Lots of critters like hickory nuts; including us humans.

My first guess was hickory nuts but they do look a little different than around here.

Deer do eat them. I killed a buck that was crunching on them. Never would have believed it if I didn’t see it. Still had the extremely hard shells in his mouth when he died.

A bit of Boogies advice.... never put a unidentifiable set of nuts in your hand! In fact don’t put any weird nuts in your hand. Pecans,ok. Walnuts ok. Pistachios ok. Chin nuts or a handful of hairy berrys not so much. Just my .02

It is hard to tell from the photo but I think they look like pignut hickories. Some, not all, pignuts have a teardrop-like shape which a few of nuts have in your picture.
And yes, I would consider hickories a primary mast crop for deer.

I'd say pignut or bitternut hickory. Google says deer eat both of them but I haven't seen that nor have I seen scat under these trees. Not saying it doesn't happen though.
On my deathbed, I will receive total consciousness. So I have that going for me, which is nice!
