Good luck Jake.

I’ll be hitting the woods this weekend. Just need to figure out how much tree time the wife can put up with ;)

Hard to tell in crunchy snow but some decent sized fresh looking track with a couple of sets of bigger older tracks around. Throwing a sit at it, grouse hunters around too so they could be long gone but a beautiful evening to be in the woods.

Only 1 big coyote this morning. He saw me and couldn’t figure me out so circled downwind to find out.. man I wish I could smell like an animal for just 1 day. It’s so hard to even comprehend how good they can smell. Can you imagine not trusting your eyes so circling downwind to know for sure?

Anyway I checked a few cams I had in that area and no pictures of the buck I was after. No other sign indicating he’s still around either. Kinda sucks, I wanted him bad. If he’s still alive maybe he will move back into the area in January so I’ll keep an eye on it. I’m also suspecting he’s only 3.5 and not that I would even consider passing him if given the chance, but if he makes it to next year he could be a really special deer for LA.

Sitting in a locust tree near a fence crossing bleeding from setting up for this evenings hunt. Kinda bummed I lost track of my 2 biggest bucks. There’s other descent ones around but I was really hoping this would be the year I could get one I watched for a while.

Went back to the same spot I’ve hunted my last 12 attempts. Set from well b4 daylight to a bit after 2 cause I had to pick my lil one up from school. Only visually saw one lil spike. But around 10 I saw some disturbed birds fly out of the thick edge and got a big whiff of a rutting buck. Suppose he was hunting the same funnel I was and can only guess he existed the way he entered a few hours later. Shucks! Trying again tomorrow.

Congrats Jmaas!!

Went to check some river/slough access at 9:00 last night. I made it across but it was sketchy! :? Brought a chisel with and there was maybe an inch in spots. Had the waders on just in case I broke through. Come to find the wind is too iffy to go back in there anyway  which was fine... I wasn’t liking that ice and when I checked depth with the chisel it was waist deep in spots. Wouldn’t be easy to climb out of that. :?

So instead I’m going to head to Wasteland and sit some bedding that I’ve only bowhunted once or twice. There’s one big tree back there that works perfect for gun hunting. Will have the waders on in the tree again ;) years ago a buck I called Jack the Ripper lived back here. This whole area is always full of sign. It’s always rubbed up pretty good and it’s one of the few areas that I consistently find scrapes. Been wanting to get 25’ up this tree for years but it never works out! Wind is perfect for access.

Will post some pics when I get set up.
