Re: Taking the Challenge

Well I’m only a few weeks away and quite honestly getting a bit nervy. As I stated when I started this fiasco, I’ve never done anything close to this. Really takes me out of my element at a time of year when my element is pretty dang sweet. Guess I’m doing some soul searching and would like to find out if my skills are up to par. Spending a week and not punching a tag really wouldn’t bother me. But spending a week and not even being close would be a swift kick in the plums. Either way I will stick to my guns and find out.

So far with plans I decided I really don’t care for tent camping. Some of the worst experiences of my life involved sleeping in a tent. Seems I either burn up or freeze to death. I got a camper for my truck in the summer at a salvage yard but it didn’t line up. On a trip like this I need my beauty sleep so I can be alert and not dozing off. I researched motels and cheap cabins in the area but they are all farther than I feel like traveling.

So my current plan at the moment is to rent one of those U-HAUL box vans. Then stick a twin bed, small fridge, and window unit in the back powered by a small generator. Not 100% yet but currently the way I’m learning

The day has arrived! I’m loaded up and just about ready to roll. Have a 4.5 hr drive but hope I can get situated and hunt this evening. Have all week to myself and to say I’m excited is a understatement. Fingers crossed, and I keep you all posted. Yabba Dabba Dooo....

Go get em man. You've already won if you ask me, doing something this far outside your comfort zone. Congrats.

Good luck. I just got back from an out of state hunt in an area I’ve never set foot in. I put on about 10 miles of scouting in a day and a half to find good sign but it paid off. Just keep pushing forward and you’ll get on deer.

Day 1

Not exactly what I planned. Travel took longer than expected and I didn’t get to hunt this evening. In the last 24 hrs the weather took a definite turn for the worse. By worse I’m talking tropical heat wave. Gonna be in high 80s my entire time.

This made tent camping something I didn’t wanna do. Personally don’t feel like ranger washing everyday in this heat. Believe I would start to smell like Dans foot after a day or so. Therefore I spent much of my time today trying to find somewhere to stay close by with power and water. No hotels within an hour so I beat the bushes and asked everyone in town. Finally got a bite! Asked a man who owns a giant Rodeo arena just 5 minutes down the road. For $20 a night I get power, water, use of the press box that has a window unit, and there’s even restrooms and showers in the cowboy locker room. So I’m set! Only regret is not trying to push for use of the concession stand.

Gonna get up early and get after em.

Day#2

Had a pretty fun day! Didn’t see anything big but 2 hrs in on my first hunt I had a little buck right in my lap. Actually felt good and let me think maybe I can do this. Seen 2 doe around 11:30 but they were way off in the distance. At 1 I climbed down and grabbed a bite to eat and a quick power nap.

2:45 found me perched over a creek crossing. Wasn’t there 10 minutes and had a young fawn come through. I thought it was about to be on! But that was it for the evening. Did see a grey fox but he didn’t give me a shot.

Gonna cook be a burger, drink a few cold ones and get ready to do it all over again tomorrow.

Oh here’s the big brute I saw this morning!
