Accessing on deer trails
Just curious cause I have a island that has 3 trails going to it ..if you hunt in a morning on a island in the cattails how do you access that island? Do you walk down the deer trail until you get to your spot? I always thought if you make a new trail that the deer would start using that? By walking down the same trail don’t deer get spooky of your scent? I know that’s why everyone says to hunt in evening but my only time is in the morning!

You could try coming in on the upwind side. If one came in from that way it would smell your ground scent but wouldn’t have your wind scent. Then hopefully one comes in from downwind to get to the bed on the island he wouldn’t have your ground scent and your wind scent just misses him

In the morning you have to come in from a different way than the deer. Its tough, but if you put in a trail, not only will deer use it, so will people, and if you need to put in a trail your over hunting the spot.

Dan, do you just blaze a path blindly in from the side to get to the spot you want to setup on, on the down wind side on the morning you plan to hunt??

Most spots better suited for evening access i go to in the evening... I have done well with prescouting an entrance in the off season. I have planned wroughts to remote spots via mapping, and had limited success. Sometimes you hit almost unpenatrable brush or muck/water to deep to cross you couldnt see on a map. And all of that is tough in the morning, not to mention how quiet it is and your sound traveling a lot further in the predawn quiet. After getting my but handed to me once by 3 big dudes, My Dad gave me some great advice... Pick your battles wisely.

Re: Accessing on deer trails
Just wondering if it would be the same if you were planning an all day hunt? Could you use it?
Also would following a deer trail during the rut be a better idea?
Thanks.

Re: Accessing on deer trails
Sometimes you have to use deer trails to access. But in the scenario you have pictured I wouldn’t even contemplate it.
