MI Bear applications 5/1-6/1

Unread postby Uncle Lou » Mon May 11, 2020 5:45 am

I just got the notification so I thought I would put it up. More info here

https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-3 ... ovdelivery

I also just read that MI is increasing elk licenses by 60 this year to 260. It is also our application period for them as well. That one is limited to residents only. I wish it wasn't and they put 10 or so out there for non-residents, but it takes long enough for a resident to get a tag. I have been putting in for at least 20 years, I think I have 18 preference points and that system wasn't around when I started applying.

Excellent reminder... going to get another point for bear hunting in the Huron Mountains... there isn’t anything in Michigan like it.

Thanks for the reminder. This will get me up to 4 bear points, I think it will take 9 or 10 to get a tag in red oak, maybe 11 by the time I have that many.

Really wish they would go even higher on elk tags, they are extremely overpopulated, overbrowse is abundant everywhere around here from them. Used to be special to see an elk in the woods, now it's almost impossible to take a drive and not see them.

I have 5 points, my last bear hunt was 2014 in the Gwinn Unit in the UP. My first tag was in 07 in Red Oak, Northern lower. So far I am 2 for 2 but avg to small bear. Been putting in since 15 - dan has too. Not certain when he can draw as a non resident. He was interested in Carney. I could maybe get this year, they will issue 5 NR first season, 7 second season, and 17 third season. Not sure how that translates to chances for NR.

Here are the 2019 draw stats. Carney for a NR will be ~14-16+ points for 1st season, then 6-7+ for 2nd season, 4+ for 3rd season.

Just got my 5th point. Maybe next year I'll cash them in.

Thanks, didn't see how to get the NR odds.
