I need to learn about thermals
I've been listening to quite a few podcasts, between East meets West, THP and the Working Class Bowhunter/Dacquisto podcast.
Recurring theme that has peaked my interest has been how they all pay super close attention to not just wind direction, but thermals.
Little experience with thermals having hunted the mountains of Montana for a few years, but I'm looking to get my master's degree in thermals.
Any go-to resources that have helped you all learn more about how thermals work, and how I can use them to my advantage hunting whitetails?

Re: I need to learn about thermals
I think dan knows a thing or two about thermals. He made a few videos too. Lots of stuff written here about them as well.
Some nuggets in this thread as well.

Re: I need to learn about thermals
I am not trying to be a jerk, but I want to make a point. You said you want a masters degree in thermals. I can think of no better place than what dan teaches, but masters degrees take several years and some costs. So effort is the key. I am no where near my associates degree on this topic, but I understand effort and costs. I would start with his dvds, all of them if you want a masters. Then his writings, podcasts, youtube videos support those lessons.
A pile of milkweed and his lessons and you will be on your way. Look at flowing rivers and creeks as well to help you visualize air streams/thermals. Watch the smoke from your grill to see how wind channels and swirls. Or when you are burning leaves watch that too. Good luck.

Re: I need to learn about thermals
Just subscribed to the podcasts-didnt know Dan had one thanks for pointing that out!
No offense taken, I'm here to learn.
I'm transitioning more from just enjoying bowhunting, to seriously trying to target and shoot mature bucks.
I love being out in the woods and want to be as effective as I can.
Hit a few public spots last year and plan to branch out even more this year.
Hung and hunted out of my 1st hang on stand that I own, plan to use that as my primary set this year, vs sitting in the old ladder stands (they've produced good sightings for me however).
I attended Barry Wensels whitetail bootcamp and got a ton of great info, would love to do that again someday if he is still offering them.
I guess I just love bowhunting whitetails, and am dreaming of shooting a buck I've got on camera all of last year, but never saw while hunting.

Re: I need to learn about thermals
Try to safely light a few smoke bombs in the hills or field edges. Do it with leaves on the tree and leaves off. Put your thinking cap on and observe Then think about the terrain in some of your other spots.
This method helped me with field edge currents years ago. I should do some more of it for sure.

Re: I need to learn about thermals
Every hunt for the next year (hills or swamps) just start tossing milkweed and watch what it does. You can also feel the thermals on your face but the milkweed really helps as you can see what is happening at a distance. Just toss it during those prime hours or whenever you want to see what the wind/thermals are doing. I year later you should have all the answers you need. There are hill thermals, the hill thermal tunnel and swamp/water/lowland thermals that you will want to be extremely familiar with. Tons of swirling winds to contend with too but that is what makes it fun and challenging.

Re: I need to learn about thermals
There are usual generalizations of course. But each area, even areas within areas. Can have different air flows. Add in low to high wind speeds and different directions. And it can seem endless. Just toss lots of milkweed and watch what it does. Don't get stuck on it always does this or never does that!!! You'll never quit learning about thermals!!!
Happiness is a large gutpile!!!!!!!

I remember listening to these a while ago, when I saw this post I went to re-listen to them and when I go back in the "truth" avail episodes it only goes back as far as episode 78. Anyone have an idea of why that would be?

Re: I need to learn about thermals
I think iTunes archives them only to a certain point...I think around 100 episodes...so that would make sense. Since they were about 100 episodes ago. I have them on Youtube as well. Let me grab a few link.
