Bummed - Double tear in rotator cuff

Unread postby DEERSLAYER » Mon Feb 10, 2020 12:10 pm

Well, I had a REALLY big year planned for 2020 including an out of state hunt for a buck I think made it through the season & might hit the 180's typical next year. Not something I want to pass on. Plus a couple other things (a lot) more important than that, but now everything is toast.

I was hunting with a torn rotator cuff this past year. I did it hunting but I didn't realize I tore it at the time. I have had a lot of pain in my life & am used to having to function through it so I just assumed it was something I could work through & deal with after I filled my tags. I was wrong. I had a couple bucks come in one evening. One was just a yearling but about 30-40 minutes later another buck came by that I decided was big enough. I barely got my bow back & shot the deer, BUT I think that is when I tore my rotator cuff again

Anyway, regardless of when I tore what, I screwed it up. I decided I would wait until it healed up to hunt more but it never did. So fast forward to now & the doc called with the MRI results about a week ago. I have two tears that will both need to be repaired surgically & it probably won't be fully healed until about this time next year.

I normally keep these sort of things to myself, but this has got me pretty bummed because it's going to screw up some really big plans on multiple fronts like starting a new business, my deer season & something really big (& a bit dangerous) that needs to taken care of this year & now I can't take care of it.

Anyway, I just decided if I came on here to rant maybe I would feel a little better about it & help get it off my mind... end rant ;)

Hate to hear that, played baseball through college and can definitely feel the strain it had on my rotator cuffs through the years. Is there anyway you’d be able to shoot a crossbow?

Bummer to hear. If you dont have a surgeon already, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Marc Milia. His main office is in Dearborn, MI. He fixed my torn labrum, and I have had a great recovery.

I lost the better part of 2 seasons between the initial injury and finally getting the surgery. Do your rehab and dont rush back, and everything should be good!

I wish you a speedy recovery!

Good advice from Seaz and I was wondering about crossbow as well.

Man I'm sorry to hear this. Maybe with some good physical therapy you will make it in time for the season. Crossbow and ground hunting?

Dang Lance, I hate to hear that! I know where you are coming from feel your pain. I hope you can still make some of your 2020 plans work out. For sure following the doctors orders and do exactly as PT says. I didnt, and made my full recovery time double!

Wishing the best for you brother!

That's a major league bummer. Will it be healed enough to maybe draw a low poundage bow by October? Even 40 lbs would work. Feel bad for you, especially with out of state trip planned.

Huge bummer! Listen to the docs. But explore some alternatives to help keep a date with those goals! As they say more than 1 way to skin a cat!

I’ve had two separate rotator cuff surgeries myself. Make sure to take the rehab seriously and don’t overdo it early. I know you don’t want to hear this but look at a crossbow next season. The surgeries themselves are fine but the rehab and slow return to normal are frustrating.

I’m sorry you have to go through it but keep your head up.

Sorry to hear that. Being injured is no fun! Maybe you can gun hunt? You have a great excuse for not having to drag a deer atleast. Anyway have a speedy recovery

Thanks guys. I'm going to see the surgeon on the 21st. He has a good reputation & has done a couple surgeries on my mom. Including her rotator cuff. The surgeon was booked into late March but they said they made room for me asap because of the severity of the tears on the MRI which doesn't inspire confidence in being ready for next season.

I will have to talk to the surgeon to be sure but I probably won't be able to draw enough poundage to hunt with a bow this season. I really wish I had went in to get it checked out sooner. I might get a cross bow for Michigan & hunt on the ground, but I won't be able to hunt with it on the out of state hunt so I'm probably out of luck there & won't risk losing my points on an expensive license I may not be able to use.

I'm already very frustrated by this & I'm sure I will be frustrated along the way but will try to do my best to be patient & do exactly what the PT says so I can recover as best I can. I'm also concerned about it not healing up strong enough. If I was 20-30 years younger I wouldn't be as concerned about getting back to full strength. I guess all I can do is wait, see & hope.... & maybe start looking at cross bows.

Don't loose all hope. I had my labrum reattached in February and was able to hunt by Oct 1. They drilled and tapped 3 anchors into the scapula and used them to tie the cartilage into place. It took about 20 months until I felt really confident in doing some things like swinging a maul, but most things felt pretty good after 6 months.

Not much you can do but get it fixed if it’s that bad. Sounds like your at the point where there is no other option.

I should take my own advice. My drawing shoulder has been messed up for years and giving me issues. I actually had my shoulder reset a few times with last Monday being the most recent. It partially pops out from time to time and I lose a lot of flexibility with a lot of pain. So far I have been able to manage with it but eventually it will need surgery. I could be one shot away from total shoulder failure while drawing on a real cold day for all I know. Guess I’ll cross that bridge when it happens.
