Re: Winter Scouting - Public Land - NOW
Been out every weekend. I love this time of year. No one is the woods.
On my deathbed, I will receive total consciousness. So I have that going for me, which is nice!

I guess I should add "measuring tape" to list of things to put in my pocket.

Measuring buck beds. Read the Dr Nordberg article above.

Here it is again.

Been carrying a fabric tape with me for years. Comes in handy for measuring tracks, stride length, bed size, rub height among other things.

Well, I should have gone back a page.

I measure by boot length. Anything that’s 4 of my size 12 winter Alphaburlys long is worth noting.

Re: Winter Scouting - Public Land - NOW
Biggest Rub I have found on public, I know guys find stuff bigger then this all the time, but this is not common in the area I am at. For sure done by a mature buck, on the back side he just thrashed it with his brow tines. It’s in such a random spot though nothing I would ever hunt, just tells me there was something mature on this little piece of public this last season, oh found some good turkey sign also.

Yeah that's not a dainty tree. That's one burly buck with a bad attitude who made that.

The spot is so random it’s just a faint trail right off a 2 track, he must have just been really hyped up. But I did find a decent spot where deer will enter the woods from the private corn field, also it looks like it will be a good area to tag team. Just hard to pin point bedding, which is probably on the neighboring private.

Sometimes I have to stop and scratch my head. I think to myself what is so special about that one random tree that gets thrashed by a bruiser? That's a dandy for sure!
