2020 Scouting Reports

Tried something new this year. As I'm always interested in new areas, I'm cramming in some obs.sits on bean fields for early season sits. Seen what I consider a giant plus various other buck doing this. I followed up these with a quick early AM walkthrough to familiarize myself with the layout and to pick out an entry to a specific tree. Never been crazy about last minute or summer scouts. By watching, I hope to get excited about decent bucks and to see where they're entering food. I dont sit field edges because the wind usually screws me up. So I observe, walk through, then make a good guess where they are coming from, hoping I'm not too far from bedding....good luck and be safe

Spent the evening scouting, then glassing in PA yesterday after work. I found a heavily used buck bed with a handful of large rubs next to it. The bed has crops 150 yards to the west, so I am assuming it is one of the nice bucks that I have been glassing. The acorn crop is really spotty this year, but I found a white oak that has quite a few acorns on it, roughly 85 yards to the east of the bed. With a stiff westerly wind, I can probably slip in and hunt that oak tree. Since the bed is below the oak in elevation, I have to wait on a stiff wind in order to beat the thermals.

I also glassed a monster that I haven't seen yet, nor do I have pictures of it. Things are looking like they might get pretty interesting in PA this year. I have to get one killed before I head to the midwest though, because this particular property absolutely get hammered with gun pressure.

Took my two boys out driving around at dusk tonight to check some areas I’ve been watching. Found this guy bedded just off public...like 30yrds off. Not the best pic...but that’s all I got. How often do you find bucks bedded right out in bean fields?

Took my two boys out driving around at dusk tonight to check some areas I’ve been watching. Found this guy bedded just off public...like 30yrds off. Not the best pic...but that’s all I got. How often do you find bucks bedded right out in bean fields?

If beans are tall they will often bed on the shady side. Hunting public Kentucky hunt last year really showed how much bucks prefer shade .

Checked the field tonight and he was laying in the same spot...still in the beans.

Went to a new place that I just got access to without knowing anything about it. It's lumpy farm country.

Walked the field edge and saw a few beds in the crops but nothing exciting coming in and out of the woods. Might be better later on considering the food source, but I was hoping for more. Time will tell, but it won't be a spot for opening weekend or two.

Was just hunting John A Kleber wma in Kentucky.
Went through 600 yards of Briars and water uphill then go another half mile through woods and I found a camera.



Its probably a beast no sane human would go back their. I just stood their in shock like really.
Was it one of you guys?

Iv been watching some bucks local to me in the beans. I had most of them on camera and located but not the big guy. I adjusted the cams tighter to bedding and I got him.





While pulling them cam I caught a strong smell of deer. I looked over and saw this rub in the woodline. Helluva rub and turns out hes bedding here too. Hes got a better bed behind the large cedar. Im not sure if its the big guy but great bed for sure. I forgot to remove the sticks from it, usually I try to do that.

Went and pulled some cams I hung couple weeks ago. Due to the 10" of rain we've gotten most of the river bottom is flooded, could only get to 2 of the cams I hung, will get the other 2 later... anyways found some good fresh sign on high ground out of the water and found some pin oaks dropping acorns that the deer are hammering. Season opens in 3 weeks... got 5 bucks on camera I'd shoot.

Put on about 4 miles today getting some late scouting in. Trying to pin down a spot to kill a buck I found snow tracking. The area is so thick with laurel that it's difficult to get a shot from the ground. they mostly travel on the old logging trails and stands aren't allowed on the property. Got a spot picked out about 140 yd from one of his beds just over the property line where I can hang a stand.

Took my day off and went and scouted a new piece of public I hadnt been on before. I had picked a spot on a map that looked like it would be a nice ridge with water on 3 sides of it, come winter when it floods I would expect it to be a good spot to catch a deer looking for a dry spot, and a cruising buck to move from one ridge to another in search of does. When I say ridge I'm meaning only 1'-2' difference in elevation lol anyways the spot looked awesome, lots of old rubs and theres some big deer using it right now. Also found a couple oak trees dropping acorns right now, if season was open I'd hunt um. Heres a little finger of the ridge, water on both sides

Saw hard horned bucks this evening. Looks like most of the velvet is gone.

Herd of does and nice bachelors eating beans that were almost fully yellow.

When I went this morning I noticed that several bean fields were completely browned, one not far from that ridge I scouted was barely turning yellow and another one a 1/2 mile down the road, but still buts up to public was still bright green. I've never hunted around crops, but how long does it take for a green field to yellow then turn brown?
