Terrible shot

Unread postby seazofcheeze » Sun Jan 19, 2020 12:45 pm

Me and Tbunao went out and did some yote this morning...more like yote scaring. On the first set, we called one in within 5 minutes. I muted the call and he stopped broadside at 105 yards. Perfect...except I left my shooting sticks in the truck and he was on my right side. I had to torque to the right and couldnt even rest on my knee. Kabloom!!! And off runs the coyote

2nd set, same deal. Call one in within 5 minutes. This time it's in Tbunao's side and comes from his 4 o clock. It made it to 17 yards before they saw each other. Coyote #2 off to the races behind some boulders and junipers. No shots fired

3rd set, skunk city.

Driving in to the 4th set, Tbunao spots one running out of a draw. We bail out of the truck and I take a shot at 300-350 and...wait for it...miss! But just barely. We are having fun though.

Set 5...skunk city, the dying rabbit did spoke a group of 10-12 miley does out, so that was cool.

"Hey Tbunao, take a shot (my rifle) and see if you can hit anything" Tbunao aims, squeezes, "click". He was on an empty chamber.

Needless to say, a little rust to shake off before the next outing, but I think we will finally score a Montana yote!

I'm looking to shoot some yotes. I have an electronic call and the guns. Been out a few times, not sure I know what I'm doing. Been practicing but no luck. How do you guys set up and what does a productive set usually look like from a calling point of view and setting up? Nite or day? Thanks
Once you get the rust off and down to bare metal it sure does shine though!

I'm in Montana now, so it's like cheating...big open country and lots of yotes. Usually hit it at first light. Play the wind and terrain and try in get in undetected. Out here I like to hunt the head of cedar/juniper draws, or any country with good topography/broken up.

In Michigan I night hunted almost exclusively. I didnt have much luck at all during the day. Usually set up 100yds off a wood lot in a fence line and try and draw them out in the open. My buddy in Michigan has a thermal, which is a huge help for spotting them. In my opinion, if night hunting, Thermal>night vision>red light>spot light.

For calling, it depends on time of the year. Outside of February, I usually do animal in distress or pup in distress. In February. howling and challenging can work well during breeding season. Keep notes of what works and where and try and repeat that.

Sounds like fun and glad you to got together, sounds like some of my coyote adventures, minus the missing. I rarely see one, so not missing because I am better than you, I am not getting that many opportunities.

Some good tips.
We never hunt alone except once in a great while our own property.

Four eyes are way better than just two to watch for coyotes trying to circle the caller and decoy that is whay you set them out away from yoi a good bit. Also try to pull them out of the woods and brush into a open field even if it is only 10 yards or so.

:D Al
