One sticking with a Lone Wolf

Unread postby parkersdad » Fri Dec 27, 2019 1:26 am

I bought a rock climbing harness and I use a Muddy pro to one stick climb. When I get to where I want to be I hang the stand that is on my back. It makes it where you don’t have to fumble around on the ground. It also saves weight. Anyone else do this?

Yes and no. My first mobile season I one sticked to be comfortable with the gear. Since then I have been 2 sticking with aiders.
I think my sticks are Muddy. 3 step full size with double steps. Using a 2 loop aider on bottom and a single loop on second stick.
That rock harness and gear gives such a great flexibility to what and how you can set up. Love it.

Yes I have done the two stick as well. I only use a 1 step aider. It is easier on the way down

Is there a youtube video that explains these methods? I am interested in trying this but I can't seem to grasp the concept.

I get the weight saving benefits of a 1 or 2 stick method, but watching all the "how-to" videos over the years just makes it seem like just a PITA when put into action. Granted, I've never actually tried it out myself, but it just seems to be a bigger hassle than just climbing with the "traditional" 3/4/5 sticks.

I’m the opposite. Climbing with 3 or 4 sticks is more of a pain in the but to me. I don’t do it for weight savings as much as I do not having to mess with all of those sticks

I one stick with a saddle on basically every one of my hunts. I use the Cain method almost to a T. The only time I don’t love it is on really limby trees. When that’s the case it really slows me down compared to multiple sticks.

In the past I mostly dismissed one sticking because for the amount of time I spent climbing (and especially climbing down) I had to hunt like 2+ miles from the truck or in really steep terrain to make the tradeoff worth it. That said, after learning how to rappel, it has me re-interested. I can get down the tree at the end of the hunt (or in an emergency like if I spined a deer in grass and needed to walk up to put a 2nd arrow in) in no time at all. If I'm going only a few hundred yards, I'm still more apt to multi-stick. But if going further, or carrying more clothing later in the year, I'll start one sticking more than I did in the past.

My biggest concern with 1 sticking is dropping or losing the stick. I know I could tether it to me. Still where I hunt has no cell service so for safety concerns I feel that I would rather multi stick. I may play around with 1 sticking this summer.

One question for those that 1 stick and rappel. What is the weight of the rappelling gear? I am just wondering the weight difference between 3 sticks vs rappel gear.

Do you have any videos of your rappel setup? I didn’t see any on your YouTube channel.

One solution to dropping a stick is always have Gear Grappler or other similar grappling hook to retrieve it. Nice to have for other items dropped as well.
