Tuf’s 2019 KY “Thornton” buck
Background: 3 weeks old in KY. Spent the first week with a bow in my hands on public. Got a doe. Had several bad luck instances with bucks and got to watch a lot of deer. Then it was on to the farm for 10 days of rifle hunting before the wives and kids showed up. Saw a lot of young bucks passed on a lot of young bucks. None of us saw many does this year and it was obvious the young bucks were doing a lot of moving around looking for does.
The Thornton buck:
One day left before our families showed up and we only had a couple of deer down. I asked my baby brother if he wanted to do an all day sit with me in a blind on a very good cruising property. He did we watched a couple moving early but they were at Mach 3. Around 11:30am my brother starts getting hungry and bored. He says he’s heading back to the shop then he would be back out for the evening hunt. I told him I’d call him if I needed him to come get me. The day was warming up a lot and supposed to get into the high 60s. I’d already been stripping clothes off so shortly after he left I’m down to my baselayer. I got my feet propped up in the window of the blind and doze off for a little midday snoozer. 12:30p my secretary at work is calling and the phone vibrating wakes me up so I’m sitting there whispering and she’s freaking out because she bothered me while I was still hunting. I chuckled told her no prob she prob just cost a buck his life. I answer her questions and I’m back refreshed and ready to hunt the rest of the day. 10 min later I’ve got a doe being chased across the field catycorner to me by a small 8pt. Well I’m not picky today so I start ranging him. 340y.....280y....315y. This goes on for two or three minutes but when she stops it’s only for a second or two and he’s pushing her again. Then I hear something to my right. 40yards away a bigger buck is slipping through the draw getting down wind of the other deer. Sneaky buck he’s just waiting for the younger to wear out the doe before he moves in. Well that didn’t work out for him. The trusty .270 barks and he runs 25yards and piles up in the drainage. So 20 minutes after I get off the phone with my secretary I’m sending her a pic with the “Thornton” buck and a “See I told you!” Text.
