First rifle buck (Lottery hunt)

Unread postby CajunSwampStalker » Fri Dec 06, 2019 2:50 am

Harvested my first buck with a rifle last week. Pretty special moment for me. Used the Browning 270 auto open sights, my wife’s stepdad gave me a few years ago. Earlier this year his health took a turn for the worse and we laid him to rest shortly afterwards.

Took off Tuesday and headed into some new territory. Plans were to scout/hunt first three days leading up to rifle lottery hunt Friday and Saturday. Put on 12+ miles in 2-1/2 days, jumped 1 good buck deep in the swamp. Ended up setting up 75 yards from trail on some scrapes. Friday morning I entered the woods at 4am thinking it was going to be a war zone but turned out I was the only one hunting this block. Passed a spike first thing that morning, told myself if he passed back I’d harvest him. An hour later I woke from dozing off to see what I thought was a 4 point licking same branch as spike. Decided to harvest him as my family had been patiently awaiting my arrival back home. Turned out to be a 130lb 5 point !! This ole boy was tickled to death!! Apparently I pulled the shot pretty bad Shot him in the neck dropping him in his tracks 40 yards from trail

Harvested a few pounds of oyster mushrooms and one big lions mane to fry up with some deer heart !! Delicious!! Even my 4 and 2 year old were eating it up !! I may have conned them into thinking it was deer jerky :D
