How High Do You Hunt?
I've been hangin stands on our farm for rut hunts next season. I hung 2 last weekend and while hangin the 2nd one I thought, this is twice as high as I hunted just 3 years ago. Both stands are 24-25' and really for that location is where I needed to be. I find that I'm not comfortable in a stand less than 20' and feel naked and exposed. What are your thoughts? How high do you guys (and gals) hunt?

Re: How High Do You Hunt?
I really don't think I could put a number on stand hieght..
My stands are placed at the hieght they are based on many varibles such as wind direction, available cover, distance from the deer trail, etc...
On average I would say 18 / 20 feet up. But there are plenty of times I am at 12 feet, or 25...

Re: How High Do You Hunt?
My favorite height would be 22'.
That being said, I've never measured before hanging. I measure by default after every sit because my pull ropes are all @ 24'. (25' w/ loops tied in the end, no noisey hooks for this cowboy).
I used to laugh at myself when I would do an in season move of an early set up stand. They were always "too low" compared to the height that my later sets had become. I thought I had the early season "wussies" and hadn't found my normal comfort zone. In reality I've come to realize that there is way more foilage in early season and it wasn't necessary to go high and trim like a lineman when you can use that foilage to your advantage and concealment.
I guess what I'm trying to say is let each set dictate not only what tree to set up in; but also how high. I have really become a "no trim" freak, when possible. and it seems that most times there is a sweet spot between the upper and lower canopies that will allow for minimal trimmage with excellant shooting lanes.

I hunt from on the ground to probably about 15'. When I hunt low its about 3 or 4 feet and my higher stands are 12-15.

Re: How High Do You Hunt?
Am I the only crazy that's hung stands 40 feet high in a tall pine? Ran out of latter, so I used what I had left of climbing pegs till they ran out, then I was on my own climbing about 5-6 branches to get to where I wanted to be. Cut a hole in the branches and found myself protected from the wind, able to see in ways the Northwoods never offered me before, and totally secure. That was gun hunting this past season in Rhinelander.
Bowhunting, like Dan said, depends on a lot of variables. I've been 5 feet up and 25 feet up - anywhere in between.

Re: How High Do You Hunt?
I have a fear of heights. I know...strange for someone that bowhunts, eh? So I like to be low...all of my ladder stands are 15-16 ft.
I have one hang on that's up there around 20 feet. The rest of the hang ons are around 18 ft.
It takes me a while to settle down when I get in the hang ons. I typically have to sit for about 5 minutes to "collect" myself before I can relax and feel comfortable.

Re: How High Do You Hunt?
Maybe an easier question to answer would be "How high have you killed deer from?". My last few deer:
2007 private hills buck - ~23ft
2008 public marsh buck - ~7ft
2009 public marsh buck - ~12ft
2009 private hills buck - ~16ft
Like others my height is never set, but rather dictated by the tree, wind.

Re: How High Do You Hunt?
I'm not crazy bout heights either so if I can get away with it, the lower the better for me! 20 feet is about my limit! I had way too many close calls with those old Baker style climbers back in the day

Re: How High Do You Hunt?
I normally hunt anywhere from 20-30 feet because I hunt alot of hilly country sometimes you got to get up there so your not in the direct line of sight of a buck above you.
