Memories

Unread postby magicman54494 » Sun Dec 05, 2010 3:51 pm

As I traveled the snow covered roads today on my way to go hunting my mind wandered back to 30 years ago to a day these same roads were ice covered. It was Dec 31st and we were hammered with freezing rain the night before. Bow season closed the next day and I still had an open tag. A buddy and I decided to brave the slippery roads and go hunting one last time. The roads were coated with a ¼ “ of ice and travel was almost impossible. We took turns driving my buddies Vega while the other guy would hang on the rear bumper and ski behind. Somehow we managed to get to our hunting area and we met some other crazy guys that we knew who were making drives in that area and they invited us to join them. The roads were so slippery that when we needed to turn the car around we would just grab it and spin it around!
On one drive I was the end driver closest to the road. A doe ran across in front of all the drivers. I watched a handful of arrows launched unsuccessfully at the fleeing deer. The doe ducked back between me and another driver. As the deer made a circle around me I drew my bow and looked for an opening. As the doe neared the opening I released the arrow and everything went in slow motion. I watched my arrow float along as the deer ran right to the same spot the arrow was heading. Whack! Right thru the front shoulder. The deer made a handful of bounds and crashed to the earth. Even though it was 30 years ago it seemed like only yesterday. As my mind drifted back to the present I wondered how today’s hunt would turn out.

The good old days! Before we knew enough to be jaded and our only thoughts drifted to a cold November morning. Every kill was a trophy! I miss those days!

In looking at the picture I noticed a few things. Dad still has that Ford 8n tractor and still puts those tire chains on every year. I still have that hunting knife that's hanging on my side.
