The last weekend of gun season...

Unread postby dan » Sat Dec 04, 2010 6:03 am

Hunting in the marsh by me was tough. In 5 days of hunting only 3 deer were seen by me, 4 deer total between me and Dave.
The last Saturday we drove all day in known buck bedding areas in the cattails and saw nothing. At the end of the day when aproaching the truck with just 45 minutes left of shooting light I noticed a patch of brush right next to the parking lot that everybody walks past. I asked a guy who was with me if he would push it and he said ok. An adult doe flew out into the parking lot and ran between the cars right to me. I dropped her as soon as she stepped off of the gravel and the shot was safe. I needed another buck sticker so I had to take a doe, even though the population is far to low to kill does in the area. 138 dressed. It was the only doe doe we seen the entire week. On Sunday I pushed a buck bedding area with Dave in a tree and jumped a nice buck at 20 yards, I got a quick shot but missed. He was a little bigger than the 1st one from opening day, but his G-2 was missing. Should of been a hit. It was an easy shot. If a couple more guys were hunting with me, I think we would of seen more, and got more. The buck Sunday ran right past where a second stander would of been if along.

Rub it in. Next time I'll join ya, Dan. Sorry I couldn't make it last weekend, I was spending the time in the tree with my wife.

Sorry Sam, wasn't directed at you... But you are welcome to come next time.
I think big buck potential is still there, but seeing deer in general is way down. Lot of work per deer.

If a couple more guys were hunting with me

Hey, I PM'd you and told you I would be around that weekend to help push like we did last year, but I never got the call. I guess a pair of 26 year old legs are of no use to you. :?

If I remember correctly last year you were complaining about being too old to walk around the marsh like you used too.

I heard it folks, firsthand, he is in fact human!

Sunday I stomped through some real thick bedding to see if I could jump shoot one. I ended up seeing about 6 deer but they were moving to fast through the thick stuff. I could only tell for sure that 3 didn't have horns. Their were a whole lot of guys out but nobody wants to get in the real thick wet stuff. That's where the deer were. Found some great spots for rut hunting next year. No trees big enough though would have to be all ground hunting.

Its that or give up hunting Deb... You have to get a doe to earn a buck tag for next year.
We do have a managed hunting preserve and some private land butting up against the public that "feed" the public. Thats the only reason there are any deer left at all. The Booner I was after and the wide buck, both hid on the managed land during the last gun season.

I'd be willing to walk through some cattails one more time Dan. PM me dates, times and locals for later this month and I'll try to sneak outta the house w/o the wife seeing me. I'll need to try the new red dot I'm having put on the shotty.
