Whats your take on UV Dan?

Unread postby cornfedkiller » Thu Dec 02, 2010 1:18 am

Just curious what you think about the UV stuff..I know some guys that are crazy about it and make none of their gear glows or anything because deer can see that, and I know others that say it doesnt matter at all. I really dont know what to think..

Whats your take on it? If a piece of clothing glows under a blacklight, does it glow to a deer?

If you say it doesnt matter, do you know for sure that some of your clothes glow under a BL, and have never had a problem with them?

Thanks again..

I'm not Dan but I have never worried about and haven't noticed the deer picking me off. I think using some of the old mossy oak/real tree camo I was too much of a dark blob and that gave me away much more than UV.

Old treebark camo was the worst for the blob affect!!

Deer can see UV light. People can't. Stands to reason they can see ya if you don't tame the UV brighteners in all fabrics these days. Except maybe the fabric Uncle Lou uses.
Also tight camo patterns all look like big black blobs at a relatively short disatance. Combine the 2 and you're a big sore thumb sticking out.
I'm not Dan, but, that is my opinion.

Judging from what i have read-IT might be more important than your pattern. I use the wash and spray.

I am not crazy about it and I am also not Dan, but I believe Deer can pick up UV glow. It is pretty simple to eliminate this potential problem though. Once you treat fabrics that glow, just dont ever wash with a laundry detergent that has UV brighteners.

Important Note to my knowledge washing with a laundry detergent without UV brighteners does not eliminate UV brighteners that have already attached to a garment. To kill UV, it is an extra step to apply the UV killer.

Nurse is correct, the fabric I chose to make my products, I make sure they don't glow.

I am pretty sure deer can see some U/V glow. But I am also positive they don't see it anywhere near to the extent we do when using a black light.
I do have a cover all suit that glows pretty bad under a black light... Killed a lot of deer out of it. Fungi on tree bark also glows UV, and if you put a non glowing human up against the fungi on the bark the non-glowing object would stand out... My take? It don't matter much.
If I was getting seen by deer and busted. you bet I would check to see if its the U/V brighteners. But Im not, so I don't fix things that are not broke.

Reason I ask is because I made a white cover for my Heater Body Suit, and I made it out of just a regular cotton sheet I got at Walmart. Im wondering if I should get some UV killer for it before using it in the woods, or if I should be alright..

I think all white looks the same to deer and that the sheet will look the same as snow.

White dress shirts work well for stalking bedded does in the snow... And pretty sure Carol uses U/V brightening soap.

I just put on hunting clothes and hunt. I really have never thought about UV nor will I ever worry about "it". I am trying to simplify my hunting.
