Rut reports

Unread postby Dewey » Sat Oct 30, 2010 1:33 pm

I thought I would start a thread for everybody to report what they are seeing as far as rut activity.

From my observations bucks are really not chasing does yet in my area of SE Wisconsin. I think we are still 3-4 days from the really intense activity of the chase phase.

In West Central Wisconsin I saw a huge buck (Mature) chasing a doe thru an open field at 12:15pm yesterday. Last night I saw alot of chasing in the last hour of light but for some reason tonight when I was hunting it seemed to have settled down a lot. (This observation coming from 3 bowhunters in my hunting party.)I think next weekend is going to be THE WEEKEND to hunt.

Yesterday evenings sit I saw 3 bucks (two 3.5's and a 5.5). Both 3.5's chased some but the 5.5 wanted nothing to do with It as he walked right by 3 doe's. He had more Interest In checking one of the 3.5 year old bucks out (territorial thing).

I registered a few nice bucks tonight. The one was in the 170s. The guy said it came in a 9:45 this morning to bed :o

I saw 2, 3.5's today at first light, not chasing but looked like they were looking. I was driving, not hunting.

My buddy and his dad are hunting this weekend, seeing some seeking action, but no real chasing..... Not saying its not happening but that's what they have seen. Getting good out there, gonna try sittin' a saddle for a CWD buck this upcoming week.

On wednesday at about 2 in the afternoon while standing by the corner of my home and adjusting my satellite dish a mature 8 or 10 pt came running by at about 30 yards in hot pursuit of a doe. She took him directly away about 500 feet then made a U turn and brought him almost back almost to my house before changing direction. It was quite a show.

posted in the bohunting reports, fawns still with does and little bucks sparring looking interested but never gave chase with the does.

Cruised logging roads last night and saw 7 deer total, 6 does and with fawns yet. The one deer by itself looked like a buck cruising right down the road and didn't jump out of the way until we got real close. He was a small dink but might have been trailing a doe.....he sure looked stupid.

All in Rhinelander, WI.

In my hunting areas the young bucks are not chasing the does yet. The yearling and two year old bucks ARE covering a lot of ground rubbing and scraping like crazy, but they seem more concerned with making buck sign than harassing the does at this point. I'm finding new rubs and scrapes every day in perimeter areas outside of buck bedding areas from the youngsters- they have made most of this over the last week. The older bucks I'm hunting on the heavy pressure public are making very little buck sign, other than over sized tracks which they can't really hide. This activity from the young bucks is right on time when compared to years past.

I have, however, received reports from friends in other regions where some buck/doe interactions are taking place.

Saw 3 bucks this evening. All 3 were doing some chasing. One of the bucks who was at least a 3.5 year old did the most chasing. He was to far away (60 yards) to tell If I've saw him before. He also made a scrape.

Finally saw my first buck chasing a doe tonight. He was a small 8pt but it seemed like the doe still didn't appreciate his attention!!
